Style Importance
Let’s be honest with ourselves for a moment. What is style? What is its importance in our lives? Is it something that someone else wears that appeals to you? Is it something that you’ve seen on fashion shows or in magazines? Is style just something you put together yourself that makes you feel truly unique? The truth? All of these answers are correct. Style is anything that appeals to you. You don’t have to dress like the supermodels and follow the trends to be stylish. I believe true style is anything that reflects who you are and your personality. It doesn’t have to be original and unique. If any one style reflects your personality the right way, I say “go for it!” There may be a few do’s and don’ts in the fashion world, but in this day and age, anything goes as long as it fits you and who you are. The important thing is to be you, and not try and be someone else. Say deep inside you’re a punk, or emo, or indie and you go and dress like something else just to fit in. Sure, you may look the part, but are you really happy? Style basically is an outward showing of who we really are. If you want to wear a captioned t-shirt, wear one! As long as the caption reflects who you are then it’s not sloppy. I was one of those people who decided “oh, I’ve grown up! I need to dress like an adult. No more captioned t-shirts for me.” Who is the world to tell me what is mature and what isn’t? We have these people on TV (you all know who I’m talking about), and we love to watch them, who tell us “what not to wear”. If they see a single captioned t-shirt in your wardrobe, no matter how high end or stylish it may be, they automatically trash it! What’s wrong with wearing comfortable clothes when you can still make them look good? They think they know style but what are all of the stars wearing when they go shopping? Captioned t-shirts!! I can understand not wearing them on a date where you go out to a fancy place or to work, but when all you’re doing is relaxing or shopping? I mean seriously… do we really want to wear three-inch heels, a nice skirt with stockings, and our best shirt to go to the grocery store or mall? Of course not! We want to be comfortable because we know we’ll be doing a lot of walking and standing in line. What if you’re in the food court and someone bumps into you spilling coke all over a $90 sweater from a brand name shop? I say GIVE US SOME COMFORTABLE CLOTHES! Back to the subject; style is important because it shows who you really are. Whether you’re punk, prep, goth, emo, or indie: express yourself in every way possible and never be afraid to show who you are through your style. The worst thing you can do is try to hide yourself from the world around you by living a lie. It makes you a miserable person, trust me, I’ve been there. You don’t even have to use a label or someone else’s style. Do what you feel comfortable doing. Create your own style! Who knows, maybe it’ll catch on!
