Believe it or not, Reddit is a good place to go to. There’s a subreddit called Askhistorians, which was setup as a forum where users can ask questions of historical significance and have them answered by community members with knowledge within the field in question.
Those that answer the questions have professional knowledge, degree-level knowledge or self taught knowledge in whatever they studied. They also include sources when asked to provide them or to back up their answers. So you don’t have to worry about receiving unhelpful comments or ridiculous answers. You’re dealing with legit experts on the subjects.
It’s definitely a great place for writers to go to. Or even for those that need help with their history homework.
