You Don't Own Me!!
Woo! Rant time!!! ninja

Ok, here it goes. Why is it that the ability to pull rank, be it in military or whatever, seems to be LIMITED AND CHALLENGED?

For example, I am the eldest of my group of friends, yet, any orders I make, more or less advice really, is the first to go? And I have all these 14 year olds (no offence, I know all 14 year olds aren't like this) thinking that since they are in the higher ups of a doomed society, they can bark orders at someone that is nearly 4 years their senior.....why? Does seniority not count anymore?

Please, someone clear this up for me...

Seniority is merely a term given to those who have been around or appart of something for a long period of time. While it does reference one's experiance in the premis of time. It's no longer a favored trait in that often times one might be proved to be more capable of handling a rank or possition of authority. That example, however, only qualifies to a job or some sort of social heiarchy, such as a public organization.
The idea in your writing however proposes to a more social endever. Something regarding everyday life. The truth is, is that now adays there aren't very many who have respect for those older then themselves. Not too surprising considering the fact that modern society -- or the media in general -- often favors those of the so-calle "MTV" or "High Tech" generation. Look around you everywhere and you'll see that most popular TV, Music, and overall media caters to the young and up-and-comming of our population. Thus putting the veterans of society in the backgroud where they are often depicted as common villians and tyrants in the social lives of those well within their teens or younger.

I truely find it sad that, in the end, when you've reached old age and respect and recognition are due, you'll be cheated of your just rewards in favor of those who are less deserving and, in some cases, more privilaged then you yourself had been.

In closing I share your frustraitions about the whole thing. I don't like thinking I'm to submit to someone who is my junior. Not simply because of their age, but because what knowledge and experiance I have will count for very little should someone else be dubbed "more promising".
