I really hate it when people make promises they can't or never intended to keep.
If you can't keep it and you tried your best to, you should sit and talk to the person about it and how you tried your best and that you are sorry. They will understand and appreciate that you did what you could to make them happy. And they will love and respect you even more for for admitting it.
If you never had the intention of keeping it in the first place you are just wrong. You are getting someones hopes up. That one promise could have been something they held highly and looked forward to seeing you complete.
Most of all I hate it when you make a promise just to keep that person happy. You should just go to hell. If you really cared about that persons happiness then you would truly mean what you say. And when they find out that you only said it so they wouldn't be sad they will feel as if they have been made a fool of and will question if people they trust have been doing this to them all their lives. And wonder if whatever kind of relationship, be it friends or lovers, you two really have.
Ugh.
