Warning: This journal has nothing to do with the movie.
So, I was watching Full Metal Alchemist the past couple of days, and there was an episode where Ed Elric talked about how "One is all and all is one." When we die, the energy in our bodies decompose, and feed the plants, which feed the herbivores, which feed carnivores, including other humans.
This is something I was already aware of. Death isn't the opposite of life. It's a very important part in it's cycle. My marine biology teacher in high school taught me something similar. If not the same thing entirely.
The Earth is the largest organism.
Despite our consciousness, we're really no more significant than cells. We die, but the organism that is Earth continues on. Because we're a part of it. We contribute to it.
You can't kill energy. When our bodies stop functioning, the energy that was our thoughts, our heartbeat, our breath, and any other body function goes towards our decomposition. It feeds the grass. The insects. The animals. Probably even the wind and rain and water. The energy that once made us be goes towards other things. And our life continues in another way. We're still alive, because we're earth.
I listened to the song 'The Last Unicorn' by America today. Then my brain caught on to something else, and I listened to it again. The lyrics are:
When the last eagle flies over the last crumbling mountain
And the last lion roars at the last dusty fountain
In the shadow of the forest though she may be old and worn
They will stare unbelieving at the last unicorn
When the first breath of winter through the flowers is icing
And you look to the north and a pale moon is rising
And it seems like all is dying and would leave the world to mourn

When the last moon is cast over the last star of morning
And the future has passed without even a last desperate warning

The Unicorn is obvious. It symbolizes many things, purity, strength, magic, miracles... life and rebirth.
Yes, there are instances where the unicorn has represented this as well. There's a series of tapestries that illustrate a Unicorn being lured by a young maiden, captured by hunters, killed, and brought back to life. In some instances, it has also symbolized the resurrection of Christ.
And then there's the lyric in this song that I always thought was out of place until now. "I'm alive."
Now this song makes a lot more sense. The last verse makes it especially obvious. It all seems to mean this.
When life has passed us by, and it seems over before we know it, look again. There is new life waiting for us. It seems like all is dying, but we shall return to the earth again. We are reborn. We're alive.
It doesn't matter what religion you follow, or even if you follow any at all. When our bodies die, we remain alive. We're just part of the Earth, after all.
