Some people who went to watch the movie aren't aware that there was another cut scene after the credits. Everyone is pretty much aware of the shawarma scene, whether they seen it for themselves or heard about it from somewhere. But there's another scene that sets up a potential sequel, which Marvel movies are known for doing at the end of their films.
For those that have no idea what I'm talking about please ignore it or you'll get spoil.
It is Thanos is who appears at the end of the second scene. In the comics he fights the Avengers after his army fails to defeat Earth. He has an obsession with death and is literally trying to gain the affection of "Death", who is the personification of mortality. He uses the cube for power (called the tesseract in the movie but in the comics it's called the cosmic cube.)
He gets a sort of brief cameo in Thor as his gauntlet "The Infinity Gauntlet" appears in Odin's Vault
So far it's unknown if he's going to be the main villain of the upcoming Avengers 2 or the next Marvel project “Guardians of the Galaxy".
