Yesterday, I was one of those long haired freaky people the Five Man Electric Band was talking about. I looked like a cross between a hobo and a hippie, a faceless not-quite-a-kid slouching behind a computer. I had no life in front of me, and nothing behind me to show where I'd been. I was in a hole, and looking up at the little speck of sky above me, I thought I could live out my life slouching behind that computer. Warm in my sweatshirt and jeans, there was nothing out there that could possibly be better than what I had right there.
But it's not yesterday. I got a haircut. Today I have short hair, and overnight I've turned into a vibrant contributor to society. I walk with my head held high, and I look life in the eye and say, "I can take you on." So what, I don't have a job. It means nothing. I've got that short hair now. Unlimited possibilities lay ahead of me, and everything I've done is a step toward success.
If ever you need to feel like a completely different person, my prescription is to take a clipper to your head and leave your old identity on the floor. Sweep it up, throw it out, and start over.
