Video
These kinds of people can actually graduate high school. This is rather sad. Many of the comments in this video were blaming the problem on the school system. I blame the student. As it is schools are often geared to teach the dumbest students so that everyone has an equal chance to learn, but what of those who refuse to make the effort? There's the saying you can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink. I feel this is the case in the video.
I went to private school for about half my education and the rest in public schools. The public schools actually taught more about war than the private schools. Then again most of the private schools curriculum for history was related to the Bible.
I digress. My point being that the public school I attended did a pretty good job teaching war. World War I is often shadowed by World War II and I can understand some students mixing details of one with the other, but this video was such a load of stupidity that it further kills my faith in humanity. The student mixed elements of the American Revolution and the American Civil War in with their explanation of WWI. I guess I can't speak for every public school but my school taught these wars well enough that any student that actually paid attention knew that WWI had nothing to do with slavery or independence between the states.
There was a course I took in 8th grade called Etymology. It's a fancy word that basically means it teaches you about words. They teach you the meanings of various prefixes, roots, and suffixes so that when you discover a new word you can often get a pretty decent idea what that word means. That's a course I took in 8th grade at private school which made vocabulary in English class all through high school in a public school completely pointless.
There is one class the public schools made mandatory I really support. That is a government class. At the very beginning of the class the students all take the test immigrants take to become legal citizens. This is to gauge what they already know. If I recall I was one of only 3 in my class that passed the test the first time around. Most of our youth don't seem to know that. Anyway you take the class for a semester and your final test is to take the immigration test again. If you fail the final you fail the class and you can't graduate. I think all schools should do this.
