Back before I built my current computer I was running Ubuntu 8.10 for a little while. My old computer was so bad it couldn't run a hard drive and a CD drive at the same time. The OS on the CD drive got corrupted so it wouldn't load. The only option that left me was running Ubuntu on the CD drive. I couldn't really install anything or save any files though. I wanted to play with Ubuntu more but I didn't have a hard drive to do that with. Finally I found out I could partition my hard drive without fowling up WinXP. I still keep Win XP around because my games won't run on Ubuntu. Other than that things have been working pretty well.
I was worried my wireless card wouldn't work because the drivers were just for Windows. After someone suggested upgrading to Ubuntu 9.10 I had no problems. The internet worked just fine without even asking for drivers. I got to customize my toolbar at the bottom of the screen. It's rather funny how similar it is to the Windows setup considering I could customize it any way I see fit. For a little while I had my wallpaper as a cute avatar art my friend got with herself as a penguin. I did that because Ubuntu is a Linux system and the Linux mascot is a penguin. xd Eventually I switched to a post apocalyptic picture of a destroyed city. It's weird, but in a way such images look beautiful and peaceful to me.
Anyway I downloaded this game called KQ which is like final fantasy. Unfortunately the sound didn't work. With a little googling I found the problem was caused by Pulseaudio. I looked around for ways to uninstall it but it was kinda difficult looking. Finally I found one solution that just required one command to get rid of it. The audio now works for it and my audio overall doesn't seem to be negatively effected.
I've programmed the Rythembox audio player to automatically start when I log in so I don't have to launch it myself. I found I could even access all my files on Windows through Linux so I could import my music from there rather than transferring copies onto Ubuntu. Unfortunately to access those files I have to access the Filesystem and give my password every time just to access the music. I wanted my music to be simple enough that I just hit play on my keyboard and it plays with no extra work so I had to copy it to Ubuntu anyway.
One thing that annoyed me was Ctrl Alt Delete. In Windows that launches task manager which lets you kill processes that aren't working. On Ubuntu it launches the shutdown menu. After looking around for a while though I finally switched the key commands to launch task manager. Now to launch the shutdown menu I press ctrl alt backspace.
As I knew already Windows programs don't work on Linux. They developed a program called Wine to make them compatible. I wanted to play some games on here but it wouldn't work with Wine even though the Wine compatibility list said it would work. That's a bit of an annoyance but I can live with that. I can always switch over to Windows again if I want to play games. Besides, Linux only has 50gb of space total.
