You are given a rank(Private, corperal, leitenant etc.) that decides if you have a squad or not, how many people are in your squad, if you can order to have bases built, how many people you can command, and if you can order entire armies.
You can choose either campain, continental conqust, global conquest, or universal conquest. You can also just have one battle. Renaccancse times can only have continental, WW2 can have continental or global, modern can have continental or global, and Nano can have any one they choose.
