I do not understand Christmas

I just don't get it

My grandmother was encouraging me to think about what Christmas really means, and I still don't get it

Hypothetically

Why would God send himself/his son to suffer and be killed by a miniscule race that betrayed him? He has the entire universe, why humanity?
I read something interesting about the concept a little while ago though
It goes something like this:

Q: What am I, that God loves me?

A: You are nothing. God loves you because he wants to, not because of anything you do.


I have to say, I kinda like that idea

But still
Christmas came and went for 2009, and I still don't understand it. Maybe I should give up trying to work it out, and just rip open some more presents.

Somehow... I feel shallow this Christmas
