Is "shop till you drop" your motto? Hopefully not. On the grand stage of a well-lived life, material possessions should play a rather small role. Of course, we all need the basic necessities of life, but once we meet those needs, the piling up of stuff creates more problems than it solves. Our society is in love with money and the things that money can buy. God is not. God cares about people, not possessions, and so must we. We must, to the best of our abilities, love our neighbors as ourselves, and we must, to the best of our abilities, resist the mighty temptation to place possessions ahead of people.
How much stuff is too much stuff? Well, if your desire for stuff is getting in the way of your desire to know God, then you've got too much stuff--it's as simple as that.
If you find yourself wrapped up in the concerns of material world, it's time to reorder your priorities by turning your thoughts to more important matters. And, it's time to begin storing up riches that will endure throughout eternity: the spiritual kind. Money, in and of itself, is not evil; worshiping money is. So today, as you prioritize matters of importance in your life, remember that God is almighty, but the dollar is not.
Thoughts for today.
Greed is enslaving. The more you have, the more you want--until eventually avarice consumes you.
As faithful stewards of what we have, ought we not to give earnest thought to our staggering surplus?
A tip for today.
Too much stuff: Too much stuff doesn't ensure happiness. In fact, having too much can actually prevent happiness.
A prayer for today.
Dear Lord, keep me mindful that material possessions cannot bring me joy--my joy comes from You. I will share that joy with family, with friends, and with neighbors, this day and everyday. Amen.
A verse for today.
Yes, a person is a fool to store up earthly wealth but not have a rich relationship with God. Luke 12:21 NLT
