He jolted awake, breathing hard, wrenching his mind from the clutches of that horrible nightmare. It was midnight, and pitch black except for one skinny beam of moonlight slipping through the window. He remembered she had said once that moonlight was so pretty, it must be what brought good dreams. He abruptly wondered if she was sleeping well, and if the moonlight had brought her good dreams tonight. He glanced over at her bed, just to make sure that she was okay.

She wasn’t there. He jerked upright, ready to leap out of bed and search for her, when a small, pale hand appeared at the edge of his bed, shortly followed by her face. She stared at him through red-rimmed eyes for a moment, then,

“Can I sleep with you?”

He wordlessly nodded and helped her climb into bed. She was so small, so light; she looked as insubstantial as the moonlight itself. They were supposed to be twins, why was she so much smaller then he was?

“Thanks,” She murmured, snuggling down as he pulled the covers over them. She curled her fingers in the sheets like she needed something to hold onto. He suddenly wanted to get her a stuffed animal. She would like one. Maybe he could get one later.

“I had a nightmare,” She whispered. He didn’t have to ask to know what it had been about.

“I’ll keep the nightmares away,” He promised, patting her hand. “I’ll protect you from bad dreams.” Because if the moonlight wouldn’t bring her good dreams, he’d keep the darkness from bringing bad ones.

She smiled, closing her eyes. “Thanks,” She repeated softly. “I knew you would.”
