Today's sermon at church was "Growing Up" in honor of Anniemarie being baptized. We are all a family, our church, as I found out today, just as in our band we are a family. Just as in our blood family we help each other, eat together, live together, spend precious moments together.
Today band camp starts...I register at 3:00. For one week I spend my time with the band, this year as their leader, the field commander. Throughout all of these five years at band camp...this really doesn't seem like my last one at Fairbanks.
As field commander, I will be watching the family as a whole, and trying to act as the model for our family. This is a big step for me, and it has made me realize that "Growing Up" in itself is a very passive thing. We don't realize it when we're kids...but then all of a sudden WHAM it hits you. It hit me a couple of times these past years...but an even more momentuous hit landed upon me today.
This is my family: in church, in band, and in blood family. And as a teenager, a commander, and a sister and daughter I have a separate commitment for each of the families I am in. This will develop and change as time moves on, and even more realizations will be made, but for now this is the moment. I am the teen. I am the commander. I am the sister and daughter.
And it is in this moment that I will live, and set out to do the greatest things I can ever hope to. For my family, for my church, and for my band. This is the moment. This is "Growing Up".
