Not the way I want to kick off my second rebirth of my daily journal, but this needs to be said.
It's been awhile since Ajiryn's done a blog, right?
What do I have to talk about today? I'm a bit irritated right now. Irritated at Coronado High School- MY highschool. And at the local El Paso news station.
For those who haven't heard, a freshman Coronado student was fatally shot yesterday across the border. She was attending a party in Juarez when a gun broke out nearby and she was struck in the throat by a stray bullet, causing her to bleed to death, presumably.
Me being the human I am, I took an extra long pause this morning during our already extended period of silence before the usual announcements. I didn't even know her personally, actually. I was just saddened because another day produced another victim in Juarez, a town I don't entirely care for. It was the sickening thought that another innocent was caught up in something they couldn't have.
The sick feeling turned into anger as the day progressed, as I realized that the majority of the student population not only failed to even acknowledge what had happened- but they derived amusement from it.
"Eh. Figures. Juarez."
"Hey, they're letting us out during the day? Let's go home, dude."
"Heck yeah, we get a day off."
Not only was that last one wrong about the day off- it was just wrong. Period.
Lunchtime- the hour- wait, no, thanks to Coronado, 45 minutes- that I figure I can forget what I heard and calm down a bit, I see a disturbing sight. Walking back from the local dollar store, I spot a camera crew, wandering about the student population walking to and from their respective lunch sites. I don't even need to ask around to figure out what they're here for- A story.
I know it's their job to, y'know, go out and film random stuff. But this was in bad taste. (IMHO) The day after she got shot- hell, the day when we even found out- and here they are, vultures to a carcass, circling around the few students who are distressed as is. Looking for an interview. Looking for opinions.
Looking for RATINGS.
How dare they even THINK about posing as concerned individuals seeking the facts? They didn't know her- They hadn't a clue as to what kind of a person she was. They didn't give a second thought to her death. I knew that the prospect of a large T.V. audience gawking at their sets during the evening broadcast was all that went through their greedy minds as they filmed fellow students 'mourning over their lost classmate.' Half of the damn students weren't even changed in the least bit from the air of normalcy I see from them everyday. That half wasn't mourning at all- just going through their day as usual. Not that it's wrong to feel nothing for someone you didn't know. But to have these shots taken and present them otherwise on T.V.?!?
I then realized that these clueless hacks were simply hired eyes, shiftless in body, leering out blankly at the students they interviewed as if they couldn't wait for them to shut up, even though they approached the students in the first place.
What the hell is wrong with them??
What is wrong with Coronado?! The day was filled with fake tears aplenty, as I watched a number of students proclaim their fondness of the deceased in order to get out of class. Really? Sure, make a mockery of us who actually, truly felt sorry for the girl.
Today was screwed up. Today I lost another little bit of faith in people. Today I lost a little more of that supposed picture of honor that Coronado students are supposed to have- hah, yeah right.
It's Coronado.
