Moons
Jupiter has many moons, but the four largest and known ones are Io,
Ganymede, Callisto, and Europa. They were found by the famous scientist,
Galileo Galilei. As you read this section you’ll learn a little bit about those four moons.
Io
Io the third biggest moon and the closest moon to Jupiter. It is known
for it’s volcanic body, with lava lakes and bunch of calderas on it’s
surface. It has mountains that are bigger then the ones in Earth. Io orbits
around Jupiter closer then the moon traveling around Earth. Io has a thin atmosphere
made out of sulfur dioxide and some other gases. Io doesn’t have any of little water.
Callisto
Callisto the second biggest moon and the third in the solar system.
It's is about the same size as mercury. It orbits around Jupiter's main
radiation belt. It also contains impact craters and associated concentric
rings. Callisto's surface is covered with craters. Callisto has the oldest, most hallowed
surface of any body in the solar system. Callisto has a very weak atmosphere made out
of carbon dioxide, and has very little tectonic activity.
Ganymede
Jupiter’s largest moon, and can be it’s own planet if it orbit around
the sun instead. Genymede has no atmosphere but ozone had been
detected on its surface. Ganymede has mountains, valleys, lava flows,
and craters. Ganymede's surface is a about equal mix of two types of landscape: very old,
hollowed dark regions and younger lighter regions marked with an
big set of grooves and ridges. Their origin is a tectonic nature.
Europa
The fourth largest moon that orbits around Jupiter. Europa most likely have or had
life because there might be water in its crust. It has a thin ice outer layer on the surface,
and is amazingly smooth too. Europa's most striking feature is a series of dark streaks
crisscrossing the entire sphere. They are produced by a series of volcanic eruptions or
geysers.
