Have you even written a letter? And I'm not talking about emails. Have you ever written a letter that you have written in your own handwriting? Has that letter possessed your thoughts, dreams, wishes, or random moments? You know, there is something about those letters that really hold a sincere place in my heart. One of my first entries in this gaia journal already talks about "snail mail", one of the things I love most. Something about receiving a letter/note (or a "snail mail" wink lifts my spirits up...no matter how I'm feeling initially.
Whether it be a letter or a small note, the thought of someone taking the time to do write it makes it very special. Lately, I thought about writing notes to random people. It sounds weird, I know. Can you imagine someone receiving a note (for no reason) and think, "Huh?”. But can you imagine the impact it would have on the person if what they read from the note actually lifts their self-esteem or even lifts their own spirit? It makes me all warm and fuzzy inside just thinking about it. biggrin
"Where is she getting these ideas?", you must be thinking. Let me start from the beginning, if I may. It started from the announcement at my church that we were going to begin a new series called, "One month to live." The thought of having one month to live has crossed my mind many times, but this time I sat down and thought about it for a while. What if I had only one month to live…how am I going to live? I’ve thought about some bad habits I’d like to break, some people I’d like to make amends to, some things I must learn to give away, and some relationships I’d like to value. Having being told that you only have one month to live causes you to rethink your choices and refocus your attention. When it comes to priorities…which becomes #1?
As my thoughts dwell on the kinds of things I’d do/change in my one month to live, I thought about preserving my relationships. That’s when I thought about writing a letter or a note my friends and family. Surely, one thing that would still be around after you have past would be the things you would write in that letter. They could be words of encouragement, wisdom, or hope. In my “letter” to any particular person, the words would become the last words I would like to say to them. Sure, I could tell them verbally, but the advantage of having it in writing allows the person to read it over and over again.
Another reason, as I have mentioned before is that I would like to encourage those whom I don’t know very well. They could include random people I meet at school or at some public area such as the park or a restaurant. It would be really nice to leave notes for waiters/waitresses, cashiers, teachers, etc. to show them your appreciation for their services and also for their time in doing so. Sometimes we could never know their situation and struggles they go through each day, but through a random act of kindness and compassion, we show them that others care…even though they may not know them personally.
Writing a note or a letter…with one life, what could be more special? heart <><
