Facing the new year
Have you ever felt the need to put a few circumstances in your life on paper? I am having that now. I’m not sure if it makes me sort them out in my head, or whether it makes me feel more secure to have the issues in my life into perspective, but here goes.
1/13/2008
Hello, my name is Sarah Elizabeth Ketron. I’m 19 years old and a senior
in High School. The year is two-thousand-and-nine and I am sitting in my Geometry class as I write this. This is a very deciding period in my
life, as well as for the United States of America. It is January the 13th,
a Tuesday. Yesterday, I put in an application to be accepted into the
University of Western Kentucky. There was an application fee of $40.00, which I gladly paid. And I’ll continue to be content with that so long as they accept me. I meet the requirements and benchmarks that
the particular college has set. A 2.5 GPA or an ACT score of at least a 20. (I made a 21 on my ACT) I am, however, unsure as to what my GPA is. Us students are never told such things and it is never printed on our report cards. When I asked why, I was told it was purposively
for privacy reasons, even though they have no qualms with putting your social security number on the reports. But no matter, I’m sure I’ll
be okay. That’s just my brain whirring. Soon, I must apply for
scholarships. So far, I haven’t missed a single day of school. And my
report card from last semester boasts all A’s and B’s. Being here is very important to me. There is a drawing at the end of the year for a car to
a student with a perfect attendance. Although I’m not in desperate
need for a vehicle; For Christmas, my father gave me a hand-me-down
1998 (or so) Chevrolet Venture. (It’s a soccer mom van! xD) But I
wouldn’t turn down a brand new car for simply paying the taxes. Last
year was a good year, late 2007 Ashli moved back from Texas (In November), and I was able to spend the Winter holidays with her. Early
2008, she had moved in with me (April/March) and we went to MTAC together. That summer, we gained both our driver’s licences. And then
I was hired at Wal-mart as a part-time cashier. (I still work there, in
fact I’m a “rising star”. I’ve gotten a raise a month ago – I’m making $7.20 an hour now) Ashli got hired at Fashion Bug that year too, or
maybe it was the prior year? I haven’t a head for these things.
Anyway, with that we both got our voting licenses. And come November, we were voting for the first time in one of history’s most groundbreaking elections. McCain/Palin was running against Obama/Biden. And guess who WE voted for? (Let me put it this way, we aren’t sour Repubs, that’s for sure.) I clearly remember watching his
acceptance speech and for the first time in a long time, feeling pride for my country. He had won in a landslide. That speech brought tears
to my eyes and changed the way I see the American flag. I now actually say the Pledge of Allegiance, I now have a Barack Obama poster gracing my bedroom wall. (LOL! Fangirlishness wins over
patriotism.) That year’s holiday season was good! Gas prices had gone down from nearly $4.00 a gallon to roughly $1.50 and it doesn’t seem to be going up anytime soon. Although food prices have stayed the same, WTF? The electric bill is allegedly going up too, but I don’t know.
The point, however, is that we were (And still are) experiencing some
relief. And we definitely need it. Ashli and I are staying with my father and the two of us take turns buying things for the house, (EVERYTHING! Groceries and nonfood items) as well as paying my father $60.00 every two weeks for RENT! (Again, WTF?) We’re also buying our own gas now. But we’re hoping to move out on our own by the end of this year. One issue in that, though, are our pets. We now have a breathtaking amount of them. Two parakeets, one rabbit, a poodle, and 4-odd cats (the tame ones – we keep inheriting strays). Apartments, from what I know, are generally iffy on pets. Nevertheless,
we will tackle that challenge as we will approach everything else this year…

One day at a time.

New Year Res
1. Get into college
2. Write & edit a novel!!! (Ashli)
3. Get our own place.
