I see her everyday,
Sitting there at school.
She smiles at talks to people,
And she acts oh-so-cool.

She's one of those popular girls,
Someone you have to like.
I see her play with her friends, telling them jokes,
Just to laugh, and shout back "Psyche!"

But I know there's someone underneath,
Someone not as cool.
Someone who wears glasses,
But contacts during school.

I know that she's just pretending,
Because I knew before this year.
In 4th grade we were the outcasts,
But I protected her from fear.

She was my best friend forever,
Until this new place.
She knew that this could be different,
So she put make-up on her face.

I thought she didn't care,
I thought I had helped her through it.
Turns out I didn't show her,
That being popular doesn't fix it.

I thought I'd shown her that being popular didn't matter,
And that having friends was the key.
But I found out I hadn't done that,
As she skipped our fun date under the Maple tree.

But it's all her loss,
Those cheerleaders aren't her friends.
All she's doing is pretending,
She'll probably find that out in the end.
