I winced at the creak of the door. The scratching stopped. I couldn’t help but stop and grimace. It would have been more of a comfort to continue to hear the sound; no longer hearing it meant that I had been detected. The danger had just increased. I pushed the door open enough to enter and then turned long enough to shut it again. If I had been found, the last thing I wanted was to end up getting flanked by reinforcements coming in an open door. It was a double edged sword. I lost a few seconds if I needed to escape, but I gained a few if I had to fight.
Slowly and cautiously I stepped into the large living area. Inwardly I was streaming curses. Realizing that the light made me an even larger target, I took it from my belt and placed it on the floor. The stationary light would keep a moving light from being a target. If something came to investigate I could remain in a corner or hide easier.
After glancing into the other rooms, I walked to the kitchen and examined that area. There were two doll-like mannequins leaned up against the counter. It was odd; I didn’t think I’d seen those before. My body was close to them and I raised a hand to try and move them out of the way. The effecting screech startled me and I dropped the gun. The limbs of the mannequins suddenly flung out at me and I caught them just before my flashlight gave out.
I had to fight. Grunts expelled as I felt blows hit my side. The door creaked again and I flicked my eyes over. Light hit me in the face and I couldn’t bring my hand up, so I turned my head and focused on the battle, somewhat relieved to see again the fight I had. Using my entire body I thrust forward and slammed them both into the counter. A resulting crack caused them both to fall still. Angrily, I thrust the doll away and turned towards the light.
I couldn’t see anyone. The light seemed to have moved into the closet and I took a few steps forward. A bullet flew past my face and another one struck my cheek. It grazed my face and I turned to move out of the way of more attacks. I ducked away from the closet and made my way out of the room.
As soon as I exited the room I realized that I was now completely unarmed.
