“Damn.” Logan jerked from his sleep and his hand immediately touched the firearm at the desk. There was no time to aim it, and fortunately, no need. Marko stood at the doorway looking pissed as ever. The scowl on his face showed that, while Logan wasn’t the final target, he’d have to do for now.
“Where the hell did you go?” Marko growled and leaned against the doorframe. The daggers that shot out of the man’s cold eyes gave Logan good cause to have woken in fear. “We had to stick together. I needed you, but you and your sorry a** just had to go and get lost. We didn’t have any casualties, but we didn’t get the supplies we needed either.” The lecture was far from done, but Marko stopped, just in case Logan would have a decent reason for deserting.
“It’s the town, Marko. You know that. Crazy s**t happens here and there’s nothing I can do about it. I saw us get attacked, I watched you die, and then suddenly everything was gone.” The explanation was more than enough, everyone who had been in this town for any amount of time knew what it was like. Perception ruled the weak minded and the strong minded were continually broken, bit by bit. Logan’s own frown turned into a smug grin as he reached into his back pocket, “Grabbed some loot though.” With a flick of the wrist the keys went flying and Marko snatched them out of the air.
“The hell?”
“They’re to the grocery store. I bet we can get more supplies now.” Logan looked pleased with himself for a moment before cowering to Marko’s glare. The smugness had only given birth to more anger in the other man. Even if Marko knew it was a good find, he wasn’t about to concede to Logan.
“Don’t get yourself, or us, killed over some damn keys.” Marko pocketed them and turned from the doorway. “Dombrowski is eating us out of supplies. He’s sneaking rations. We’re going to have to deal with him soon.” He gave a slight snicker as responsibility passed to Logan before lightly pounding the doorframe with his fist and heading down the hallway.
Logan, who’d been holding onto the gun for the entire conversation, placed it back on the stand next to him. The man leaned forward for a second before letting his body fall backwards onto the bed again. Logan closed his eyes and sighed. As he lay there, Logan felt himself starting to drift back to sleep.
“Mary?”
Logan felt his mouth moving but no words escaped.
“You could be her twin.”
