Click.
Twang.
Cherry swore the moment she felt her hand relaxing. Her release was perfect, as her body's practised movements ignored her brain's realization of her mistake. The string left her fingers, pushing 30 pounds of force into the shaft of the arrow.
Her instructor would have been proud of that release -it was perfect, as always- but that's not what was on the young girl's mind. That click was not her clicker -an instrument on her bow that tells her exactly when she has pulled the string back far enough consistently- it was someone else playing with a paper clip or something behind her. Her clicker has not gone off yet, and she had shot.
That basically means the arrow's shooting through the clicker device, which means that the fletchings will snag on the clicker, and that will send the arrow haywire.
The girl spun back, glaring at a fellow gaian until he scurried away under the look. He had only just been opening his laptop case to check something, did he do something wrong? The only noise he made was a small click, that shouldn't be enough to distract the archer, not when there's people screaming down at the battlefields below.
Cherry turned back to her work, sighing as she looked over the battlefield. She was standing on the top of the Arenas, one of about a dozen archers stationed here. It really was her own fault- she's never trained herself properly into feeling the clicker go off. She releases on instinct when she hears it. She hoped that she hadn't hit a human by accident in that little clicker incident.
Note to self, train more with the clicker. Enhance the vibration of it somehow perhaps.
Cherry scanned the battlefield, where Humans, Dark Elves, Vampires, and Zombies alike participated in an all-out melee. A few human medics ran around, handing out sandwiches to the injured. Cherry wish that she could have stolen a few healing rings off of zETA, but then again, the Gaian Gods would probably murder her for it. But seriously, sandwiches? Ham? Turkey dinners? Why hasn't anyone thought up of any better ways to heal in the human faction?
Ah well, better than the Zombies, they're swapping their entails. And the Vampires sort of just jump into a coffin in the middle of battle. The elves have the right idea though, bringing healing potions with them.
"Cofee there Archer?" Leon came by, inspecting the defences up here, followed by a few Home Base Medics who were handing out coffee. Cherry shook her head. As much as she loved coffee, it's probably not a good idea for her hands to be shaky with caffeine while shooting.
"How is everything?" Cherry asked the knight, drawing another arrow. She knocked it, but didn't bother to shoot. If she's going to start a conversation here, she won't have the concentration necessary to make an accurate shot.
"We're being overrun I'm afraid. Your name is Cherry right?" Leon replied, sounding rather awkward. Cherry nodded, wondering if Leon was still a bit embarrassed about the Ring Quest problem. Sending an adventurer out to kill some dangerous garden gnomes, only to find out that you don't have the reward you promised them. Cherry didn't mind, but Leon was quite upset about it.
"Yessir. Do you need me on the field? I'm skilled at close combat and healing as well." Wonder if anyone will notice that she has her diagnose ring on her finger right now. Not to mention the Mantis Ring and the Solar Ray ring. zETA stuff is really useful in this battle after all. No need to inform anyone about it though, as long as the Admins don't catch her.
"Actually, I've heard rumours about you. You've been defending the humans for several years now. We need you to..." Leon's words trailed off as he realized the girl was moaning.
"Infiltration. Every year it's infiltration with me. Why can't people ever be content with me just standing here using monsters as my quiver? It suits everyone just fine...don't worry, I won't go off ranting, I'm kind of known for those though. But look, before you order me to go kill myself and turn into a zombie or something, please give me a good argument so that I won't find any logic to rebuke this."
Leon blinked.
"Eh...?"
"Just tell me why I should go spying again."
"I never said- well, that's what we were planning anyways. Um, well, I..."
An annoyed gaia nearby pushed past Leon, probably thinking the big man unable to explain himself properly. It was one of the Humans who fought alongside Cherry last year. "Look girl, they're kicking out butts out there. We want to know why. You're good at sneaking onto other teams. What else do you need?"
Eh, convincing argument, points taken.
"Fine, but there'll be people who recognize me. I left quite a few angry Vampire Elders last year, not to mention my little sis..." Cherry winced slightly as she remembered Chree. It's been a while since cherry's seen the Vampire. The other gaian didn't seem to notice and pondered the question for a moment.
"That scarf, is that a Hermes?" He pointed to the sparkling gold piece of cloth wrapped around Cherry's neck, a grin spreading on his face. Cherry scowled as she caught on what he meant.
"Oh no! No way, I'm not going around as a rabbit!"
She lost that argument too, and soon, a Hermes Rabbit showed up to join the Dark Elf Home Base.
