I was out in the country, visiting Grams. Somehow (now that I think back, I can't remember why) I landed myself under an oak tree with a rather good book in the middle of the countryside just west of Gram's house.
You see, I am an avid reader, and when I'm into a good book, only a grumpy math teacher or the fire from the nostrils of a mighty dragon in the book I was reading could stop me.
I didn't even notice the rain. Actually, it rained rather lightly. I first realized I was in a bad place indeed when the first bolt of lighting streaked across the sky, and a minute later the boom like a large hardback dictionary being dropped onto the shiny hardwood floor of a big gymnasium from twenty feet in the air.
I think it was the fact that just then the chapter ended which really saved me. I put the bookmark at the beginning of the new chapter curiously called In Which I Am (Almost) Struck By Lightning.
Right as I stood up off of the roots of the great oak tree I was blinded by a great big flash of lightning and at the exact same time I heard a deafening CRACK! I could feel electric energy pulsing through me and I was thrown to the ground.
I stumbled to my feet and bolted as far away as I could from the tree as I heard the crackle of fire and the groan of a massive tree about to fall and squash me flat.
It was on fire. It crackled with strange radiance. It let off a great, black smoke that drifted thickly into the air. I shuddered to think what kind of smoke I would be letting off if I hadn't finished my chapter.
I consider this the time that I (almost) got struck by lighting.
