Tsunede's Thoughts and Troubles
Writing always makes me feel much better.
Shadows- Chap. 4
I was just finished in the shower, when I heard a loud Bang! It was foggy in the room – maybe I had turned the water on too hot. I was still amazed at the fact that they already developed plumbing. The air smelt thick in the room. I wish I was still outside before that fish and the rain appeared. Suddenly, there were loud clashes and bangs in the other room. Wondering what the two had said, I crept back into the room I was staying in, without disturbing Andrew as much as possible (he doesn’t like people acting suspicious around him while he’s reading).

Looking at the ceiling must’ve seemed to be my favorite thing, because on most of my time, I had nothing to do. I could always read those books later; witches and dragons don’t even exist… right? It’s not like they’re going to give me some sword my some “magical” powers to fight them… right? They’re not going to give me some book to cook my own potion in a cauldron and make me chant spells… right?

I turned to my side, and faced the chipped wall. A small trail of ants were making their way through the window. I watched them for what felt like hours, but somehow, they never stopped coming. I peered outside of the window and saw nothing but a large shadow. It was so dim; there wasn’t any sunlight either. I turned back resting on my back. Should I do some research on that fish and the figure I saw in the forest?

For the next few hours, I searched all of Adam’s books, many of them consisting of how to slay mythical creatures and potion-making. Finally, I came upon “Creature’s Dictionary: Pictures Edition”. I tried to make my eyes focus on the words of the page. Skimming the pages made my eyes hurt… bad. My eyes fell upon a picture. The contents had the same image as the fish and the figure. Quickly, I read the name and the description.

“Grenos
A Marked human which has devoured many souls at once. They have been recently found in our waters and forests. 96% likeliness to have been wandering around carrying Loneliness, and 99.2% likely to aim for their closest relatives first to cause them great pain. Can appear in any form of animal or human. Most likely to devour souls that have seen death. Recent discoveries say that they are under command of Marked Chiefs and subordinates. Appeared since 261 B.C.”

I wasn’t very good at English; I never was. Basically, I didn’t understand what they were trying to say. Were they trying to describe the characteristics? Or were they trying to describe what they eat. If so, I hope Mama hasn’t been “Marked”.

I creaked the door open and stepped outside. Andrew was still reading, his eyes pinned to the pocketbook. Before I could ask him my question, he said (rather loudly) “If you’re going to ask me something, better off asking Master instead. If you’re hungry, too bad; dinner’s not ready yet. And if you want some fresh air, it’s raining again outside. Better just read those little books Master gave you and get prepared; he said he’s going to train you tomorrow.”

“Andrew… is it… O.K., if I ask you something…?” He merely grunted. “What can you tell me about… Grenos?

Now he was showing slight interest in the subject. “What do you want to know about Grenos? It’s not like you’ve ever saw them.” He paused for a moment. Maybe he remembered something. No… if he remembered something, he wouldn’t retort to what I said. “Just be happy that you don’t have to face with them. They’re not someone you would want to visit everyday.” Then he left and went into his room.

Dinner was silent. I noticed that the two men have different eating habits. One eats mostly vegetables and the other eats only meat. One likes to dip his food into sauce for flavor and the other eats it plain. One uses a napkin and the other uses his sleeve. The only thing that seemed to be cackling and making noise was the flame on the candle. I can’t help but keep staring at it. Andrew, on the other hand, wasn’t staring at the flame, but staring at me, evidently because he threw a drumstick at me (“That should knock you back to your senses…”). But the flame was still odd. It kept twisting into far-out-of-reach directions, like a goalie in soccer making impossible saves from side to side. It looked like a flame that they would use in a ritual.

September 19, 2007
Adam gave me two small notebooks to write in and told me to sleep earlier and well tonight after dinner. I’m writing in one of them now. I’ve planned on keeping one as a diary and the other as a note taker to write in important stuff on the things I’m going to learn from Adam and hopefully Andrew. I hope Andrew learns to accept me, because I feel like I’ve already accepted him – oops, I’ve got to run; Andrew’s slamming on my door impatiently and telling me to sleep now. Will write back later.

I closed the notebook, and comforted myself under the sheets. Thinking of what the training would be like, I drifted into my sleep again.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I was awaken by Andrew’s yelling and slams on the door. I nearly forgot why I was here, even though I still don’t know the full reason why. I slipped off the bed and got dressed.
Adam was already waiting outside when I got there. I was hoping he wouldn’t take me to some deserted ground and make me handle a horrible beast, and he didn’t. He took me to a dark alley by a winding path on the streets, and leaning on one of the walls, was a little child, crying and partially lying on the floor. With a closer look, blood was dripping all over him, and it didn’t seem like it wanted to stop pouring out of his body. Adam handed me a long, sharp blade. He looked at me. “Kill him. He’s worth nothing. He’s just trash. There’s no point in keeping trash, especially because they’re useless.”
