My story...
I know it's not too good and it's definitely not closed to being finished.

Midnight Hunt (Subject to Change)
By: Megan Harper

Their car had just pulled up to the scene. They could see the body from where they had parked. If they didn’t know better they would have assumed the person was just sleeping. The red-head turned to look at her brunette partner.
“You ready to check this out, Kylee?” She asked.
Kylee turned to look at the red-head before responding, “C’mon, Riona. You know I’m always ready.”
The two walked side by side to the edge of the crime scene tape. There they waited until the cops already on the scene checked their ID badges.
“So you are the two detectives the force is always talking about.” The cop said, “It’s nice to finally meet you. Hope you live up to your reputation.”
“It would be might be more of a pleasure under normal circumstances.” Riona said in an exasperated yet condemning tone, already used to this reaction although she never feels it appropriate under the circumstances, “Now’s not really a good time, now is it.”
The cop stared at Riona in disbelief not sure how to respond to her obvious dislike.
Kylee elbowed Riona, hard in the ribs. “Please excuse my friend here.” She said, “She doesn’t like it when her sleep gets interrupted. Riona glared at her as Kylee grabbed her head, forcing her to duck under the crime scene tape. She dragged her over to the body.
“What was that for?” Riona asked, “You know he was hitting on us.”
“And that’s a bad thing why?” Kylee responded, “You need to lighten up a little.”
“We have a job to do.” Riona said, ignoring her.
Kylee smiled slightly before she crouched down and studied the body. “Caucasian, male.” She stated, “A shot to the head and a shot to the chest is the believed cause of death. Appears someone was going to cut of the head, starting at the back of the neck but either gave up or was interrupted. No signs of a strug-” She was cut off by a commotion behind her.
There was a guy at the edge of the tape that was trying to get by a couple of cops. Kylee looked at Riona and they nodded their head in unison. Kylee stood up from her crouch and walked with Riona back towards the edge of the tape.
“Is there a problem here?” Kylee asked.
One of the cops turned to look at the girls. “He is refusing to stay on the civilian side of the tape.” He said, “He isn’t even responding to our questions.”
“Sir,” Riona said, “I’m going to have to ask you to calm down.” She moves the other cops out of the way and holds him back by herself.
The guy didn’t calm down. He continued to try and push past her. She was a little surprised at how strong he was.
“Sir,” Riona said again, “If you persist I’m going to have to restrain you.”
A light chuckle caused both Kylee and Riona to turn and look at another guy. This guy had unnaturally pale skin and was wearing sunglasses, even though it was night.
“Do you find something funny?” Kylee asked him.
“Just the thought of your friend attempting to restrain mine.” He said, chuckling again.
“If this is your friend you better get him to calm down or we are going to arrest you both for obstruction of justice.” Kylee stated simply.
“I’m tired of this.” Riona said. She moved her hands to the guy’s wrist. She pulled his hands behind his back and then up, forcing him to bend over at the waist. She then kicked him in the back of the knee, forcing him to the ground. She slammed her knee into his spine and kept it there. He was now laying flat on his stomach, his arms still twisted behind him and her knee pressing into his spine.
Kylee turned to look at the other guy, a smug expression on her face. The guy was staring at Riona and his friend. His expression was like that of one who doesn’t realize what just happened.
“Now do I have to cuff you or are you going to calm down?” Riona asked the guy.
“I’ll calm down.” He said in what almost sounded like a growl.
Riona released him and stood up. Kylee reached down a hand offering to help him up. The guy stared at her hand for a few seconds before he took it and allowed her to help him up. After he stood up his nostrils flared briefly and he quickly dropped her hand. He exchanged a look with his friend.
“Now,” Kylee said with her arms crossed, “What is your name?”
“My name is Connor Moonstone; my friend’s name is Damian Bloodstone.” He said, closing his eyes as he attempted to remain calm.
“Those are odd last names.” Kylee said. She studies Connor, committing him to memory for future reference. He had skin that was the color of a natural tan, and his hair was ebony black. His eyes were his most startling features. They were two different colors. One was a bright blue that almost seemed to glow. The other also seemed to glow except it was a yellow color. She assumes he is wearing contacts. His build was muscular but lean. Although his muscles were prominent they weren’t too bulky.
Riona was doing the same with Damian. His skin was so pale he would have been believed to be sick if it wasn’t for the fact he looked so healthy. His hair was whiter than his skin. His eyes stood out because they were a bright red, like the color of blood. Riona also assumed he was wearing contacts. His build was almost exactly like Connor’s.
“Why are you so bent on getting across the tape?” Kylee asked.
“Because,” Connor said in a voice that was obviously being forced to remain calm, “That’s my brother.”
“Why didn’t you say that before trying to charge in like that?” Riona asked.
Connor turned to look at her with barely suppressed anger. “I did.” He said, “The damn cops wouldn’t listen to me.”
“How did you know where to find your brother?” Kylee asked.
“I could follow his sce-” Connor began before shaking his head and changing his mind, “He takes a walk every night. He always uses the same path. When he didn’t come home at the usual time, I followed the path he takes.”
A cop came up behind the girls and began to speak, “The forensics team collected all the evidence they could find and they took the pictures. Are you two finished looking at the body?”
“Yes.” Riona said without turning around, “Bag it up for the morgue to examine it. Although I’m pretty sure we know the COD.”
“May I ask how he died?” Damian asked.
“A shot to the heart, a shot to the head, and it appeared someone had attempted to cut off his head, starting at the back of his neck, but didn’t finish.” Kylee said.
Connor nodded his head and began to walk off. Before Damian followed he turned to Riona and took her hand. He kissed the top of it, his lips feeling cold against her skin.
“Thank you for all your help. That was very impressive, what you did to Connor.” Damian said, still bent over her hand and looking up into her eyes, “I have a feeling we are going to meet in the near future.”
Riona was completely stunned speechless. She had no idea how to respond to that. Kylee realized her problem and that they forgot to ask something important quickly called out, “Mr. Moonstone, Mr. Bloodstone. We will need you addresses in case of further questioning.”
Kylee got a clipboard and pen from a nearby cop and handed it Damian. He quickly wrote down their addresses and phone numbers, before handing it back. Riona nodded her head and Damian followed after Connor. Kylee was studying what he had written.
“Look at this.” She said handing the clipboard to Riona, “His handwriting looks beautiful but very outdated.”
Riona took the clipboard and nodded her head slightly. “It suits him, doesn’t it?” She asked.
“I think someone is crushing.” Kylee said in a playful tone, poking Riona in the side.
Riona jumped and giggled slightly before she elbowed Kylee in the ribs. “Let’s go home.” She said.
The two girls walked back to their car and they drove home. The whole time they felt like someone was watching them.
“You smelt it too?” Connor asked Damian as they ran through the forest, following the car.
“Her blood called to me like none has ever done before.” Damian said, “It was such a sweet smell, I was tempting fate when I kissed her hand.”
“Which one smelt good to you?” Connor asked, “It was the one that helped me up that smelt good, the Brunette.”
“The fiery red head was the one with the sweet blood.” Damian responded, “The one that took you down.”
“Don’t remind me.” Connor growled, “She would have got you too. You can’t get out of that kind of hold with sheer strength, in a way it uses it against you.”
Damian nodded his head slightly in understanding. They continued running in silence. They only stopped when the car pulled into the driveway at a house where both girls got out.
“They must live together.” Damian said.
“Smells like it.” Connor replies.
They waited outside for twenty minutes before walking up to the door and knocking on it. Riona answered the door. She was wearing black pajama pants with a crimson spaghetti strap pajama top that was lacy on the neckline and at the bottom. A toothbrush was in her hand and she moved it a couple more times before she realized who was at the door. Her eyes began to widen and both guys looked at her with amused looks on their faces. She slammed the door shut and they listened as she ran to a different part of the house.
“I wasn’t expecting that.” Connor said, as he tried to suppress his laughter.
“Neither was I.” Damian said, “But it was very interesting.”
Connor moved his hand to knock again when the door opened. This time Kylee was standing at the door. She was wearing midnight blue pajama pants with a dark purple spaghetti strap pajama top that was lacy on the neckline and at the bottom. She had a huge grin on her face.
“I heard you gave Riona quite a surprise.” She said. “What brings you two here?”
“After we left,” Connor begins, his nostrils flaring again, “We realized we forgot to ask a few things. When we got back you two were gone but one of the cops on the scene gave us your address.”
“If you don’t mind us in our sleepwear then you two can come in and ask us over a cup of hot chocolate.” She offered.
“We don’t mind at all.” Connor responded with a slight grin on his face.
Kylee steps aside and both the guys walked past her into the living room. There are two couches in there, both only big enough for two people. Connor and Damian exchanged glances before sitting on opposite couches.
They watched as Connor poked her head out of a doorway and then quickly pulled it back in. Kylee walked into the living room and studied their seating positions. She shrugged her shoulders and sat beside Connor. Riona walked into the room carrying a tray with four large cups of hot chocolate. She almost dropped it when she saw how everyone was sitting. She managed to keep a hold of it and placed it on the coffee table. She then handed each person their cup before reluctantly sitting beside Damian.
“Ask away.” Kylee said.
“First off,” Damian said as he turned his head to look at Riona, “What are you two beautiful ladies names?”
“My name is Kylee, and hers,” Kylee said indicating herself then nodded her head toward Riona, “is Riona.”
“Those names befit you two perfectly.” Connor said.
Kylee took a sip of her hot chocolate to hide her smile. Riona took a sip just to hide. Damian and Connor followed the girl’s example except they each took a gulp.
“Is that the only question you wanted to ask?” Riona finally said, “If it is you could have got that from the officers on duty.”
“We also have information we want to share with you.” Damian said as he moved to make it look like he didn’t have enough room so had to sit close enough to be touching her, “You are the detectives on the case, right?”
“Yes we are.” Riona said, composing herself, using business as a shield, “What information do you have for us?”
“You see there is this group of people that are under the false delusion that my family is a pack of werewolves, and I’m the alpha.” Connor said.
“These same people,” Damian said, “Believe my family to be vampires and they also believe I’m the Sire. That would be the head vampire, the one who created the others.”
“So you think these people had something to do with your brother’s death?” Kylee asked, curiously.
“The manner of death points towards it.” Connor said, “Legends say that to kill a werewolf, you must shoot it in the head, and the heart with a silver bullet. To be on the safe side you can also severe it’s head.”
“That’s very interesting information.” Kylee said, “Do you know where we could find these people?”
“If we knew that I guarantee we would not be here right now.” Damian said.
It was the way he said it that made his point clear. He hadn’t meant that the “hunters” would kill them because they knew their hiding place. He meant that they would be killing the “hunters” instead of talking to the girls. A shiver ran down both Kylee and Riona’s spines.
Connor looked up at the large grandfather clock in the room. “It’s getting late.” He said, “We should be going. We have a long walk ahead of us.”
“Walk?” Riona asked, “You didn’t drive here?”
“No.” Damian replied, “We prefer to walk instead of driving. It saves money and it’s good exercise.”
“Why don’t you two stay here for the night?” Kylee offered, ignoring Riona’s look, “You can walk home in the morning or we can give you a ride.”
“Are you sure it would not be too much trouble?” Connor asked.
Riona sighed as she gave in. “No problem at all.” She said, “In matter of fact, you two can use our beds, we will sleep on the couch bed.”
“No.” Damian said, “We will not toss ladies out of their beds, we will use the couch bed.”
“And we will not have guests sleeping on anything but comfortable beds.” Kylee countered, “How about this, our beds are huge. Big enough to have two people on each side and a decent amount of space in between them.”
Connor forced himself not to smile. “Are you sure we won’t be imposing?” He asked.
“Not at all.” Riona said, “We don’t mind.” She was looking at Kylee with death in her eyes.
“Ok then.” Kylee said, grinning, “I think it’s about time we all head to bed.”
Riona stood up and everyone followed her lead. She walked down a hallway that had two doors at the end. She took the one on the left and Damian followed after her. Kylee walked into the one on the right with Connor right behind her.
Riona spun around quickly and looked at Damian in the eye. “Don’t touch anything but the bed.” She said. She then turned back around and crawled into bed, staying on the far left of it and facing off the edge.
Damian just grinned and slipped onto the bed in about the center of it. He turned toward her and watched as she quickly fell asleep. When he was sure that she was in a deep enough sleep he moved closer and wrapped one arm around her. He smiled, knowing that this accomplished more than just being close to her. He closed his eyes but remained awake for the rest of the night.
Meanwhile Kylee and Connor had settled into bed. They were both about a foot from the edge and just a little more than that from each other. They had not been able to fall asleep as fast as Riona so they had stayed awake, talking.
“You know…” Kylee said, “If Riona gets her way, Damian is going to have one hell of a night.”
Connor grinned at her choice of words and responded, “Don’t worry. Damian can take very good care of himself.”
“I’m sorry she is acting the way she is…” Kylee said, “I think she is attracted to Damian and she is trying to deny it for some reason. Maybe it is because she prefers to judge by personality and not looks and she is afraid that’s what she is doing. I mean, Damian is a very good-looking guy.”
“And I’m not?” Connor asked. He knew exactly what she thought of him but he just wanted to see her reaction and if he could make her blush.
Kylee, not knowing this did exactly just that. “I-I never said that…” She began to stutter and blush fiercely, “I m-mean you are also a very good-looking guy. In my opinion you are the best looking guy I’ve ever met and you have a wonderful personality.”
As soon as the words were out of her mouth Kylee clapped both hands over her mouth. Connor began to chuckle and she blushed even more.
“I should be going to sleep…but….” She said as she began to shiver, “My heater hasn’t worked in a while and I can’t go to sleep when I’m cold.”
“If you don’t think I’m being too forward,” Connor began, “I could keep you warm. It would come at the price of you having to sleep right against me, but it would keep you warm.”
“That’s not too forward at all.” Kylee replied, “You are just offering a solution to my problem and I accept it.”
Connor hid a grin as he turned toward Kylee. He reached out, wrapped his arms around her and pulled her close to him. He rested his chin just above her head.
“Oh.” Kylee said, slightly surprised, “You are warm. If I didn’t know better I’d say you were running a fever.”
She then curls up against his chest and quickly drifts off to sleep. Connor listens to her breath for a few minutes before he does the same.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

In the morning, Kylee woke up against what she at first thought was a brick wall. When she opened her eyes and saw the bare tan skin she almost screamed but a gentle hand covered her mouth. She looked up and saw Connor looking back at her. It took a few minutes but everything from the night before came back to her. She nodded her head, indicating it was okay for him to remove is hand.
“For a second there I thought you had forgotten me and was going to scream.” Connor said.
“For a second there I had and I was.” Kylee replied.
She gently pulled herself away from Connor and slid her feet off the side of the bed. She stood up and left the room, walking across the hallway and quietly opening Riona’s door. She was surprised when she saw that Riona was in Damian’s arms. She was even more surprised to see that Riona seemed to be snuggling close to Damian.
“How did he convince her to do that?” Kylee asks, thinking she is talking to herself, “Riona wouldn’t need the warmth and even if she did she wouldn’t agree to that.”
Kylee spins around quickly when she hears a sigh come from right behind her. Connor had moves so quietly that she hadn’t even realized he was there.
“Chances are,” He begins, “She doesn’t even know it is happening. He probably waited until she was asleep before he put an arm around her. Then sometime during the night she snuggled close due to the comfort her body sensed there. It is best to not let her know about it.”
“I don’t keep things like that from her!” Kylee protests, “Besides, if Damian doesn’t get up first it is going to be just a little hard to hide, don’t you think?”
“You have to.” Connor says looking down at her then back into the room, “Damian get up. I know you are awake now get up. Damian get your a** out of bed now.”
Damien remains in the same position the whole time with his eyes closed, he fights to hide his smile.
“Obviously he is not awake.” Kylee says, pushing him back by pushing both hands against his chest, “Now come help me start the tea. If you are going to be staying with us you are going to help out.”
Connor grinned to himself and allowed her to push him before turning around and walking on his own. He stopped short right as he entered the kitchen.
Without turning around he started to talk, “What do you mean if we are staying with you? Whoever said that? We were just staying for the one night.”
Kylee doesn’t stop in time and runs straight into Connor’s back. “Ow!” She cries out rubbing her nose, “If what you said last night was true then you two are in danger. Which means since it is Riona and mine’s case you will now go under our protection until the case is solved. That usually means moving to a hotel but I think it would be better if we all stayed here.”
“Is that really how it works?”
“Yes”
“Ok then. We will have to stop by our places to pick up clothes and necessities.” Connor resumed walking, “What’s this about tea? Don’t you mean coffee?”
“Of course not.” Kylee responded, “All that caffeine in the coffee is unhealthy for you. With the herbal and mineral tea we drink in the morning we get the same amount of energy in three cups of coffee with just one. Plus, the energy doesn’t go away and we don’t crash. It’s very healthy.”
Kylee walked past Connor and over to the coffee pot. She filled the back with hot water then put a filter in the front. She opened the container with the tea leaves in it and put in ten of them. She then closed the top and turned it on.
“Never before has that coffee pot been used to make coffee.” She said proudly, “We even call it the tea pot instead of the coffee pot.”
Connor was about to open his mouth to respond when they both heard an angry shout from the back rooms.
“What the hell do you think you are doing?!” Riona yelled angrily at the top of her lungs, “Get away from me! Get the ******** out of my house!”
Connor and Kylee ran back toward Riona’s room and push the door open. They saw Riona standing on top of her bed, clenching and unclenching her fists, looking like she was about to pounce on something. Then they saw Connor, her supposed victim across the room, grinning like he wasn’t in any danger at all.
“Calm down Riona!” Kylee said, rushing over to the side of the bed, “He didn’t do any harm.”
“No harm? No harm?” Riona said, no longer yelling but her voice was cold, “His arms were completely wrapped around and pulling me close. It was all against my will while I was sleeping.”
“I’m sure he meant no harm.” Kylee says, “Maybe it happened after he fell asleep. If so, he had no control over it”
“Then he should have slept on the floor!” Riona says are voice still calm but cold, “I was burning up all night because of him. I was so hot I dreamed about fire!”
“Now why would you go out of your way to lie like that?” Damian asks, “You know full well you weren’t hot, in matter of fact, you were colder then you have ever been before and you enjoyed it.”
“You don’t know anything about me!” Riona says getting defensive, “You have no idea what’s going through my mind!”
