I'm full of happiness & joy right now because I don't have to work retail on Black Friday, which is not only the day after Thanksgiving but is also the busiest shopping day of the year. It's sort of fun, I guess, but it's also a humongous pain in the a**.
It's full of people who are shouting things like "Gimme this! That's mine-I put my hands on it first! Why don't you have more of these items?!?". That's a lot of anger for sale items. People have actually been hurt over these sales. (Well, not at my bookstore, but they have at the chains & such.) What makes a lot of this really funny is that a lot of these so called "sales" aren't really the great deal that people think that they are. Many times stores will subtly raise the prices of the stuff before hand so when the big sales roll around people will think "Oh, what a great deal I'm getting!". I did that before when I worked at Blockbuster. We always raised the prices on select items before the big shopping season.
Moral of the story: don't plan on doing most of your X-mas shopping on the day after thanksgiving. You'll probably spend more than if you were to start buying earlier in the year. (Besides, all of the good sales are during the summer!! Got to get rid of all the old merchandise to free up shelf space for all of the holiday goodies!)
