Development Update 11/12 Why Does It Take So Long It might legitimately be asked why things seem to take so long, sometimes. Imagine a novel. Taking the nanowrimo definition of a novel, it's 50,000 words . Now imagine that writing this novel is extremely complex -- if you make even one grammatical error, the entire chapter can't be read. Even worse, if you have a continuity error -- like the character wears a brown hat in the first chapter but it turns into a black hat by Chapter 10 -- then the entire book crashes and can't be read. Okay, worse: imagine that there are multiple people working on this novel, so you have to coordinate with a bunch of other people, lest the book crash and burn. Finally, it's a _really_ long novel. Instead of one novel, it would a compendium of over 150 novels, and any discontinuity between any of the chapters would cause problems for readers. That's the complexity of Gaia. Halloween Conclusion The art team took it by a storm (with about 70% of the votes), and the development team bows in awe. Really, it's no shame losing to the art team, they did a fantastic job. We liked it so much, even, that we decided to rescue the boos and release them back to the art team. Evolution The bottle made its first evolutionary step towards a better and brighter future, one filled with light and woolen laughter... okay, maybe I'm piling it on a bit. But still, it evolved! Many people are now asking on the forums if there will be some way to go back to the first stage, and all I can say is... keep an eye out. There are layers to this. Beta Program We opened up the Gaia beta program, and got tons of respondents; we closed it for now, though, while we go through the applications. We still haven't sent out PMs about it or anything, it'll take us a bit to process this all. We'll be opening it again at random intervals, so pay attention to the stickies! We're also in the process of starting a liaison group, which I think will be announced this week. Stuff Coming Up This week, some fixes to cash shop (including fixing buying of letters and the gift profile module); fixing post actions in guilds; making the friends list in My Gaia show up better; some moderator tools; a new feedback form; and tons of backend stuff. Also, bunches of features over the next two weeks. nanowrimo = National Novel Writing Month. Every November scores of writers hit the cafes and coffee shops and write a 50,000 word novel in a month, yelling out questions to each other like "If you wanted to kill a person with an untraceable poison, what would it be?" and "I need a name for a female protagonist." It's a good way to hook up with an artistic, fun crowd.

	I got greatly annoyed at just using basic Java and having it tell me that I missed just one tiny thing (I think I may have even once crashed the entire computer with a mistake in the coding, but that could have been the crap school computer >_>;; ), so I can only imagine how tough it can be having multiple people coding for a site as large as Gaia. Especially since Gaia has so many different features already, and an insane amount of users and traffic on a daily basis. I'm sure you guys are going as fast as you can without creating anything sub-standard, which people will appreciate you for when it's finally released 3nodding

	Lol, who was it who made the post as Cindy in the GCD?(Nevermind... xD I looked up.)That was the best way to tell the story, ever. I love it when you guys hop onto NPCs (IE Ron Bruise) and post around the GCD & stuffs. I think it just adds an element to Gaia. xD Anyways, yay! I can't wait to see what Fausto ends up as! I'm gonna wait to get one, as opposed to buying it now. ;3 <3 Beta program squeeee.

	Lots of fixes for this week, I hope that the users would give thanks about it once they notices the fixes. Don't you go crazy now. D: Congrats on being in second place from the decoration contest, and nanowrimo sounds fun. Hope it doesn't become a big chaos on the first day. ^^;

	Hahah, I did Nano three years in a row, I had a lot of fun but I never got anywhere CLOSE to finishing, mostly because November is a heavy time because it's pushing up to finals for school. I'm determined to do it seriously once I'm out of school though, I plan on publishing at least two story books in my life :3 @Evolution: You wouldn't have any idea how many stages Fausto's Bottle has to it do you? I'm SO looking forward to many more days of freaking out on the GCD with all the other bottle owners wondering what it's going to do next heart And I loved the new NPC's (Dr.Singh and Timmy)

	Do you have a set number of people for the Beta program that you're allowed to accept? Or is it anyone and everyone that fits the qualifications? I've never heard of this novel writing thing 0_o Of course... the only things I write up are reports xd Damn college shakes fist I don't think I could write something that big in a month... Maybe if I had nothing else to do and already knew what I wanted to write about... But I definitely couldn't just do it on a whim. Though it'd be neat to try... Maybe next year ^_^ I voted for the devs X3 The giant grunny and the story with it was just awesome X3 You should totally sell the big plushies in the store X3

	Oh, the different meanings to liaison. xd ; Since the definition that I know didn't fit, I had to look it up. XDD Speaking of applications.. I think Taligator finally finished her batch. Nanowrimo sounds fun. If I ever have a bunch of free time and a laptop, then I'll try it. And yay for bunches of features that I know nothing about! XD Well, Lanzer did say that we were getting another sponsor quest on Monday but that really isn't a new feature. Oh well. I can always pretend~

	I love that you namedropped NaNoWriMo in there, since I am doing it this year. <3 Yeah, it's crazy like that in the nano forums. Fortunately for me, I didn't have any of those questions, since I always do a thorough outline before I start a story. Personal quirk. ;D Oh, and I signed up for beta testing! I really hope I get picked. (nudge nudge wink wink) I'd love to do this for Gaia and feel that I'm helping the staff in some way since, unfortunately, I could never work for Gaia. emo ~ Kit

	That was a very good analogy you go there. It helped put things in perspective. I'm so excited that the Fausto bottle has evolved... so excited that I went out and bought all the other evolving items. It shall be interesting to see where they go.

	Great intro to this entry! (Because of it, you gained a subscriber, woo!) If only people would realize the complexity of something like Gaia without you having to pound it into their heads. crying And it was awfully sweet of you to perform that daring rescue mission! heart lol Now we've all gotta wait for the art team to shove them into a warp pipe so that we can all enjoy Bit Boos! lol
