Open doorways all slam shut a step before my face
My friends all seem to vanish with the wind, without a trace
Until the world I thought I knew is such a different place
That haunted shadows goad my fear and, fluttering, keep pace

The emptiness is sorrow bound, though light doth burn away
The darkness joins, and thus consumes, the fervent light of day
The sun still shines, but in my mind, there can be only rain
But for all this, I know the cure: to hold you once again!

The sight of you alleviates, but pain shows no remorse
The duties of a man whose life has left him bent and coarse
Is this the way a corpse must feel, beneath his coat of dirt?
Just forced to hide my thoughts away, Is it wrong that I hurt?
