Development Update 11/5
Wow, what a week.

Hacking and Scamming
Hacking and scamming is a problem. I know it must be devastating to put hours and hours into a character, only to have all your items ripped away overnight. Truth is, though, that hackings and scammings are expensive to fix. We have a bunch of people that devote time to them, and the average scam takes a couple of hours to repair. A lot of companies don't even try to address hacking and scamming, as it is too time intensive.

I'd venture to say that true hacks -- i.e., someone truly using some advanced, nefarious means to acquire somebody else's password -- are a small, small percentage of the total number of cases. Usually it's just someone with a fake login site (phishing) or a PM that alleges to be from a moderator, demanding a password.

Occasionally there are threads on the boards by users, claiming that there is no way that they could have ever fallen for a scam, that their password must have been stolen. I've looked at probably 20 or 30 of these personally, because the user was so convincing that I was sure that it would turn out to be a hacking. But, in every single case so far, it turns out that the user had been scammed by a fake login.

So, that's why we're adding more security features to the site. We blocked the common phishing sites with the blacklist, and tomorrow we'll roll out interstitial pages on external links -- basically, when you click on a link that goes elsewhere, we'll take you to a big red warning page first. (You'll be able to turn off the warning, if you want, but darn it, we want you to be sure!) There are also some sneakier things that we're doing that will be invisible to anybody but scammers.

What else are we doing? We're adding some more people to fix the hacks/scams. Also, we're going to be sending out a message to users asking them to confirm that they want their hacking case to be taken care of -- this will weed out the users that never log in anymore.

Cash Shop
Cash Shop was a wild ride last week. There were some really, really hairy issues with IE that had to be dealt with, and I won't go into details except to mention that IE is the devil's work, for sure. It makes me want to get an IE voodoo doll!

There was a sound and a fury raised over the evolving items over the weekend -- basically, an offhand comment by a new intern led people to believe that evolving items were never going to be finished. (I have to admit that sometimes it seemed like my poor attempts to explain things only confused people more.)

So, to clear up the major issues:
- there's a sticky up for the Evolving Items FAQ
- they do NOT need to be equipped to evolve
- we're good on both code AND data. This is not another [fill in your favorite languishing Gaia feature here]
- none of the items have evolved to the next stage yet
- the items will evolve at different rates, and we won't reveal the rates. (But you should be able to see some changes while eating cranberry jello).
- the poses available for the different items differ according to the item; some have incredibly complicated posing setups. We aren't going to give anything away but... when your item goes into the first stage of evolution, it'll be obvious.

They will turn out pretty neat. I'm not carrying this bottle on my back for my health, if you know what I mean.

Wallpapers
The new wallpapers are out, and not only are they cool, our own omgwhat (developer and cubicle-tin-foiler) has a wallpaper featured. I've always wished that I could draw -- it is one of those talents that has eluded me, like learning another language. Clearly the obvious course of action is to live in another country for a year while making a (scant) living as a street artist.

Coming In The Next Few Weeks
Interstitial pages and some backend speed improvements tomorrow; the friends list gets fixed in the "My Gaia" page on Thursday, and other miscellaneous bug fixes.

Major feature rolls out next week -- no hints allowed, sorry, except to say that it's very cool. Also, by mid-Novemberish we plan to roll out some neat ways to keep in touch with Gaia.

Eh. It's amazing that the few seconds it takes to look at where the link goes can save an account but people believe the other user for some reason. :/ As for those that claimed they were not scammed, they're usually in denial. XD But as long as gaiacnline.com is on the blacklist, I'm a happy user. :'D

I gave up on visiting Gaia on IE. There were just too many glitches to bother trying to use it.

These new features wouldn't have anything to do with the games Lanzer mentioned in his journal, would they? xd ;

I still loved it when VJ came out.. the first thread I saw about it was "I searched for boobs and found what I was looking for" type of thread in the GCD. >.>

Major Feature Roll-out?

You're killing me! gonk I can't handle being this addicted! I need rehab! REHAB!

"big red warning page" - Okay as long as its easy to turn off and I don't have to go hunting through the site to find out where the off switch is. lol.

Its great that you're addressing these things and I'm very excited to see the vending possibilities that will arise when these cash items start to evolve (ie: will Gaia break into mass love as if it were as MC and the MP erupts in revenue like an erection with all the masses of gaians crying at once "MUST HAVE"! and the venders crying "BUY LOW SELL HIGH!" and laughing insanely under the weight of their profits?)

Oh yes... I'm on Gaia too much.

Ah! An FAQ link X3! I was just beginning to wonder about my evolving items. Answered all my questions it did heart xd Now I have something to really look forward to every day to see if my items have changed or not <3!

As for the wallpapers, I've been waiting the entire event for the downloads to be put up XD I even went out searching for a program that would automatically switch my wallpaper every other day in anticipation of the graphical goodness that was about to be rained upon my PC. And I wasn't disappointed in the least <3 I have to say, Reapersun and Pepper-tea also made some AMAZING wallpapers, as did Spork and Kirby (everyone I know is in LOVE with the glowing coco!paper).

You know, one of these days, there is going to be a public outcry that you guys are giving us to much to do/look at and you're doing too good of a job keeping us entertained |DD

Dang. One of my primary concerns about the Evolving items was whether their original and intermediate stages would be retained. I like the bottle, it's pretty! And it would be irritating--and expensive--to have to get a new one all over again, which itself would change over time. xp

Additionally, are the evolving items going to continue changing indefinitely, or will they have, at some point, "Final" forms?

I'm also curious to know if we'll be warned prior to Cash Shop/Evolving items being removed, or if there's going to be a schedule regarding it like with MC's.

Anyways, I'm looking forward to seeing it all up and running smoothly. I must confess, I laughed really snarkily when I saw a thread in Site Feedback this morning by some user having a shitfit over the Evolving items not being 100% completed/implemented or whatnot. I didn't post, because I probably would have said something really rude, like comparing his overreaction to that of a six-year-old told by his big brother that Santa Claus wasn't coming. rolleyes

What is it about the internet that causes people to so easily turn into rabid, frothing monsters over the vaguest misunderstanding or misinterpretation?

I was going to ask it it was necessary for us to be eating cranberry jello for them to evolve and then I thought, "Mmm... cranberry jello. I bet that's good."

So reading the FAQ... some CS items are going to be limited. Well now... that changes things. Another set of items among MCs and event items that are limited. Ooh... more things to throw into the economy.

Answers the little confusion I had about the birthstone crowns.

Can we get an FAQ for the entire cash shop... cause it'd be nice to have the info about things being taken out widely available. Otherwise, users are going to freak and acuse Gaia of turning into NeoPets again if it's suddenly brought on and people were unaware of this fact.

Uwa~! I can't wait for the friends bug to be fixed in the My Gaia section. Seriously, it's the one page on Gaia I go to the most. It's so much fun to see who updated their journal, check out the PMs I just got, and see... well, pretty much everything. So, for me, any glitch fixed there makes me a veryyy happy pumpkin.

Stupid IE... It's so mean, even when coding sites in plain HTML. I can't even imagine coming up with good code for over 1 million users to kill. Really.

And, if you don't mind me asking, as this is my largest fear, how are you preventing keyloggers on the site? Are you guys thinking about making some form of drop-down menu with a color to choose from or something? I mean, it's not much, but it really could help, I think. ^^; (<-- Knows very little about how hard it would be to make the code actually work, as her knowledge of PHP is just from an intro class.)

I hope you had a good Halloween! =D

Hey Pan, I have a question. Do you know if the Weapons Shop is still being worked on for release? Lanzer stated in one of the ATA threads that we'd be getting it by Christmas.

Do you know if this project has been delayed at all? surprised

Stop Releasing So Many Features On Gaia scream

Awesome! biggrin Well, the Cash Shop mixup must've been fun to deal with...

I had no idea hacking and scamming issues were such a big problem, and took so long to resolve. I don't know how you could possibly deal with such a thing. Is there anything that the resolvers wish they had that they didn't? Maybe Gaia could help them out a bit and give them extra information or some such like that.

Gaia IM? biggrin Gaia Mobile!? That'd so rock! I can't wait for the new features!
I always get so excited to log into Gaia and see a new announcement.
<333

Thanks for keeping us in the loop, as usual! You're awesome!

@Shiarka Jonless: Yah, other users have mentioned the same thing. I'm pretty sure we'll be giving people some sort of notice, but I'm going to check on that.

@D-Chan: not much we can do about honest-to-god keyloggers -- all of the non-keyboard password schemes I've seen are pretty unwieldy. Fortunately, I don't think there are many keyloggers out there.

@Zweizi Galon: don't know anything about that, I'll ask around

@Spirrow, BoaP: no, not IM this week, sorry biggrin
