Another side, another story
If you're not even going to try, then eff off. I'm sick of waiting for you to all-of-a-sudden remember reading what I sent, or waiting for you to remember me. So you know what? Forget it. Why should I put in the effort if you can't even be bothered to read a simple PM?

It's like... coming off of finals and all, moving stuff out of the apartment to come home for the summer... I have absolutely ZERO motivation or drive to mod at all right now.

I find it funny sometimes, how people always say they wish to be mods. Why? So then you get to keep the forums clean, yah? It's a worthy cause, but believe me, there is so much you don't see that goes on every day, and it makes me tired just to think about it.

Here are a few examples of what I go through.

Example 1: Troll invasions
So the other day, I just happened to pop into a random QnA thread. And -what- do I see in there? Some troll, brand-new account, posting Tubgirl in QnA. Mind you, thanks to the chatterbox I'm mostly desensitized to the stuff, but hell, I didn't expect to see it in the early afternoon.

It kind of ******** up the rest of my day, to say the least. Especially the part in which I had to track all of the posts and delete every single one, but no, this troll didn't stop at Tubgirl. They also posted porn all over the GD and CB.

Even worse is a troll commonly referred to as "toobis". Now this guy or gal, don't know which, loves to pop into CB and the "post your pic" thread that has over a gazillion posts with archive errors up the wazoo, and post the Pain Collage. Over 30 times in one post. Now in this collage, there is everything from your not-so-neighborhood-friendly Tubgirl and Goatse to bad porn, pictures of genital diseases in advanced stages and hentai. Not a fun thing to clean up, and less so when in a GINORMOUS thread like that particular one is.

GET IT THROUGH YOUR HEADS. Troll posting bad s**t --> PM a moderator about the user IMMEDIATELY.

Example 2: Bitchy users part 1 ~ Signatures
Now as we all know, Gaia has its signature limits. That's cool. Makes surfing much easier overall for many. Yet when I disable someone's sig for being a 500kb+ animated GIF that they put in "because it looked cool", I don't really appreciate being asked the everlasting question:

"But there are other people with sigs bigger than mine! Why'd you disable it?!11!!!"

Now this display is normally accompanied by many emotes, causing me to seek shelter in the Emoticon Rape Clinic over in GCD because frankly, you can't just use one emote to voice your dissatisfaction; you have to use enough to stretch my inbox out.

Here's the answer to your query. Just because other users are breaking the rules doesn't mean you can as well. Mods are only human; we're not omnipotent, but it's your own damn responsibility to make sure you're following the rules. You agreed to the TOS after all.

Moral of this story? You see a big sig, report it. Move on.

Example 3: Bitchy users part II ~ Additional Notes
So there comes a time in every Gaian's life when they come across the *dun dun dun* 14g post. These are ones that stretch out the page vertically so badly that I've worn out my "Page Down" button to the point that I can barely see the text anymore. So I delete and warn for the things, and I get some responses like this:

"Why did you delete my post??"

Hello? I wrote it right there! It says "14g scam post; these are false and are prohibited on Gaia" right after the words "Additional Notes"

Moral here: Read the whole PM, please. It tells you more than you think it does.

Example 4: Robot mods? I don't think so:
Now, users in this day and age are all for speed, delivery, and instant gratification. Fast cars, powerful and advanced televisions, free, fast gold here on Gaia. Why else do you see accounts barely an hour old asking for donations?

Now the final installment of this post will deal with how users seem to expect a mod to simply drop everything and address their issue, even though they have an entire 30 other PMs and 30 other users to aid. These kinds of floods tend to occur in waves, and all when I'm not supposed to be online due to REAL LIFE issues that need dealing with.

Hell, I shouldn't even be online now. If Ina found out, she'd have my hide because she says I'm too stressed and overworked.

"I sent you a PM 5 minutes ago, why haven't you responded yet?!?!?!?!!"
"Hello? Are you there???"
"plz help me soon!"

No, I'm not lying either. I've actually gotten processions of these before.

To wrap this burrito up...
It's sad. What so many people don't understand overall is that moderators are people too. We have families, we have friends, we have lives outside of Gaia. Mods are also users, and I don't like how I'm treated in threads sometimes. Because of the events after my modship in the GEN, the one place I thought was my home in which I wouldn't be scrutinized, I've found it difficult to be a "normal" user, just chatting with friends.

Why try chatting if all people see is a cop waiting to bust them for doing something wrong? Oooh, I'm just so scary that I can't be talked to like a normal human being!

We go through so much. "Mods suck!" "I was unfairly banned! mods should die!" "Mods aren't doing enough for the site!" "Mods are unfair!"

Those make me want to mod even less, but still I press on just to support my companions. Without our teamwork, this site would've collapsed long ago, not from Sushi, but from the community.

Conversely however, just being a mod is already an honor I never imagined I would have, because it enables me to meet so many new people and come to a nice love-hate relationship with this site that I've drained so many hours of my life into, not just with the GEN but also with modding.

Final moral of this story:
Give mods a little bit of a break. As hard as it may be to believe, we're people too.

For every thousand morons not worth the breath it would take to enlighten, there is one user who understands that you are human and thus need to eat, sleep, and pee at regular intervals. The majority of those ones in a thousand acknowledge that you furthermore have a right to a life outside of Gaia and that family takes precedence over making sure that tubgirl gets Trashed four minutes faster than if you weren't online.

You're not modding Gaia for the sake of the wankers who wouldn't bother reading stickies even if it meant they would be entered into a lottery to win a year's worth of BDSM crossover yaoi. You're modding to protect the minority of Gaia. The few. The nerdy. The people who were educated and spanked in their younger years to good effect.

I get these all the time, and I'm not even a GAIA moderator. It's very annoying, I feel for ya. <sarcasm> As a respected Bug Reports specialist </sarcasm> I get PM's all the time asking me various questions (well, more like statements) like
"MY SIG DISPERD1!!!!11!1banana1!11lolz" Then they're like "OMG YOUR HELPFUL BAI" If you don't answer because you're busy.

Moral of the story, none. Just type so people can read it (doesn't have to be proper grammar, just so I can read it)

    Well, enough of my rambling.

Y'all is people, too? Never noticed.

    Anyway.

    Emoticon Rape Clinic

This I have to discover. =D That sounds so awesome in so many ways.

Anyway. Thing is, though...um, yeah, you hit it right on the head when you say that all other users see is a policewoman. People on Gaia tend to be assholish in that they instantly assume that everyone in a set group fits one very negative stereotype.

Ex., GENers are rigid, unmoving morons who are so out of touch with the Exchange, it's not even funny. (Well, I certainly fit the "out of touch" stereotype.)

Q&Fers (well, Q&Aers now) are elitist, brownnosing bitches.

And mods are snobs who get off on banning innocent newbies just because they can't type a complete sentence in English.

And if people are getting to you? Then dammit, I'd say take a mod vacation. None of your friends would hold it against you - I know I certainly wouldn't. (I don't know whether you still consider me a friend, though. wink )

This sounds a bit rambly, yes, but I hope my point got through.

Modern Rxmance: Strange, isn't it? It just seems to be one of those implicit things that happens when people believe, or know, that you know more than they do, so they ask questions like mad.

~Lady Oddness~: Scary to know, but even scarier to actually see. I know that everytime I see such posts, it's both disconcerting as well as tiring.

hikaruxanadu: *GLOMP* You never talk to me anymore. crying Thank you for your kind words though. whee

    N.C: Er... no comment... .-.;

EmOMaY: Thank you for the hug. 4laugh

It's an interesting place. You really should go see it sometime. Only by making regular, weekly visits, am I able to keep my sanity intact, because you know, you just can't have enough emotes in a post to emphasize your point...

    The stereotypes seem to love me...I thought it was bad as the GEN co-owner. It's just about as bad being a mod, only now, I also have to factor in irate users who attempt to "challenge authority" and argue as to why their begging thread belongs in the Exchange. .-.;

GEN-related, I was referring to the non-GENers, you know, those ones who were annoying little pricks to me when I was a modling, the ones who said I was supposed to act professional all the time to "set an example". That had to be one of the worse days I've ever had this year of 2005, because I gave up so much to become a mod and help others out, yet my efforts are lost on such users as those.

I've kind of been on a vacation now ever since school let out. I have nearly no motivation to be on Gaia, which is sad in its own way. I know that no one would hold it against me, but still... I was modded because I proved in some crazy way that I could help, but... I dunno.

*SMACK* And of -course- I consider you a friend!!

I love gaia.....its annoying to use forums polluted byu massive stupidity, i understand and empathize with your and the other hardworking folks of gaia's plight. I use sometimes the forums for some game(cough gunbound cough) and it is so polluted with idiocy it drives me nuts.... I llike chatting with mods because usually they have a much more level head than most people and are much more responsible and mature(thats pretty much why they were made mods...) i just want you to know that i amd thankful and most of gaia is, one a few idiots here and there are being retarded and bringing you down. I love this comunity, most of the people just dont notice how hard you guys work because you do your job well enough so that all of the troubles really arent there for us to see. I'm sorry for what those people do; it is really sad to see such cruelness come from Gaians, but I guess it really just reflects how greedy and self-absorbed people can be. But the other side of the coin just shows how kind and sweet and patient others can be (i.e. you).

Thank you for all of your hard and dedicated work. It really does put dents into the slums of Gaia.

I wish people would stop joining a website just to break the rules to get their screen name banned. Its ridiculous. Mods do, Do a LOT of work each and everyday. And the people breaking the rules on here don't really help, All this proves is that the people who only create screen names, break the rules, and then go and pm a mod asking a pathetic question of "Why did my account get banned" just prove they do not have anything better to do with their lifes. It is hard work to be a mod, That I do believe , although I've never experienced it, I do believe a mod when they say it is hard work to do their job. I think mods are great though. Most people support showing how much they appreciate mods by giving some people a fair warning with their animated picture of someone who is watching and writting under it " Mods are always watching" Hopefully that will help most people. I appreciate the work you and all the rest of the mods on this site do to keep most of this website clean. Thank you for your hard work. ^_^

I know what it's like to be a mod, i used to be one for an ezboards forum. It wasn't fun and yeah i hate those perverts too, don't they have a job or a life or do they all just sit around looking for disgusting porn sites all day.

Needless to say even though i was a moderator we couldn't keep a steady flow of new members joining because our admins were always busy, personally I knew of one being incompitent because he didn't know what the hell he was doing and then the other two we had were too busy, understandable but honestly we could have picked better people. I admire this place though, it's faster at moderating than I could ever do, but then again I'm still in high school. Anyways, I'm not going to try and kiss your a** or butter your groin. I just saw this on my strole through the forums and it made me laugh. Thanks and keep up the good work.

Gaia did collapse a long time ago. Gaia is so far collapsed, you'd need the world's best excavation team to clean it up again. Gaia is so far gone, you'd need an interdimensional machine just to retreive it. Gaia is so [********], you'd need a time machine and about three hundred years of psycotherapy to make it a 'virgin' again.
