I think it all depends on what it is that you are keeping a secret about. I know it sounds wrong but if you know it will destroy the relationship I would keep it a secret if it is something small that you think wouldn't hurt you two badly then I would tell the person sweatdrop

Well if you gave your word to keep the secret, you should always honor your word. If it might damage your relationship you should still keep your word. The one you love should be satisfied enough with a reason that you can't tell them, and you shouldn't lie when confronted.
But that's perfectville and not reallity...
By love, this is if you mean love as in the fairy tale deffinition and not the newer version that should be deffined as "to like, to be attracted to, or to be intrested in"

If on the other hand a secret doesn't involve promises, not matter how serious, I think I would risk it and tell them the truth. It might not be as bad as it seems to you at the time and they may be very forgiving, and if they leave; they really didn't care enough about the relationship. It will hurt, but it will better you in the future.
