I'm just using it...would've been cool if I had written it, but, anyway, on w/ the fic. sweatdrop (FYI: the she in the song is a he in this.)
Haunting Memory
Sand. That was all he could see from the back of the Land Rover. Sand. Sand. More sand. A few dunes. Off in the distance was heat-haze. The sun looked more like a white-hot disc than the normal yellow he was used to.
"Teishi, c'mon!" The young man sighed and set a sandal-clad foot on the ground. He let out an odd yip as the granules slipped into the leather and burnt his foot, wincing, but hiding it. What I wouldn't give for a cool shower. Rain. A bottle of water. Something, he thought.
Teishi looked over at his blonde friend, Ice--the lad couldn't help thinking of a pitcher full of ice-cube filled tea--and swayed. In the blonde's place stood, for an instant or for a century, a lush forest and ferns. Suddenly, the desert returned. "You okay?" asked the man, feeling the boy's forehead. The younger nodded dumbly. What's happening to me?
I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand
That night the group sat around the fire, listening to an old man telling stories. They couldn't understand a lick of what he said themselves, but their guide helped them. Teishi glanced at the old man, then away, allowing the words to run into his mind as he stared into the dancing colors before him.
I dream of fire
Those dreams are tied to a horse that will never tire
And in the flames
Her shadows play in the shape of a man's desire
He shivered. The words had made sense. The pale boy reached over his shoulder and touched his back between his shoulder blades.
"He says you are like the ones in the stories," said the guide quietly. Teishi blinked. "The ones with skin like moonlight." He nodded, gazing into the flames again, then up at the sky. So many stars...even more than back home.
This desert rose
Each of her veils, a secret promise
This desert flower
No sweet perfume ever tortured me more than this
At first, he didn't notice it. It was so faint... Brown eyes flashed gold as he looked around the faces lit by the physical light. No one noticed the silhouetted shape moving just beyond the boundary of their campsite, no one except him. His eyes widened.
And as she turns
This way she moves in the logic of all my dreams
This fire burns
I realize that nothing's as it seems
The figure turned. Slowly, quickly, it seemed a mix of both, as if the turning caused after images to be imprinted upon the air. Teishi felt his heart jolt. He was standing in front of the person, staring up into eyes the pink-gold color of the first dawn light. He didn't notice his breath leaving in small puffs in the frigid desert night beyond the warmth of the fire. The warmth of the one before him was its equal, if not more. He opened his mouth to say something, but a finger touched his lips, silencing him. The crack of a stick in the blaze brought him back to his body, the words still whispering in his mind:
"I'll come to you tonight."
I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand
It should have surprised him that no one heard his gasping, the rustling of the sheets under him, but nothing seemed a surprise around the one above him. He breathed in sharply, tasted lavender and a sweet stickiness that rang of sugar or honey. Warmth slid into his mouth. Another kiss. Soothing hands going over his sides.
He opened his eyes, landed sharply on the low bed, groaning slightly as if he'd fallen from a short, sharp distance. He pushed himself up to a sit, touched his lips. They still tingled from the velvet softness.
"What's up?" Ice's voice.
"I know the way."
I dream of rain
I lift my gaze to empty skies above
I close my eyes
This rare perfume is the sweet intoxication of her love
He stared up at the blank, pitilessly azure sky from the confines of the vehicle. Closed his eyes, willed the car to be there, to be at their destination. Willed himself to be there. They were. The boy muscled his way out of the car, tumbling to the ground, picking himself up and setting off at a run to start the climb.
I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand
It was long, hot, hard. The terrain, as he knew the one waiting for them atop the peak would be, was unyielding. His battered sneakers made little noise as he trekked through the undergrowth, began to run, leapt passed the guard, into the trees, staggered, kept running. Stopped by the water. Panted. He knew this place.
Sweet desert rose
Each of her veils, a secret promise
This desert flower
No sweet perfume ever tortured me more than this
Smell nothing. Touch nothing. Taste nothing. Only look, he reminded himself. Large eyes stared up into the canopy, drank in anything and everything they saw as he spun in circles. It came again, that smell, that feeling. He stopped turning, ears pricked as they heard nearly noiseless footfalls.
"You came."
He swallowed, turning to face the speaker. Sun-browned skin glowed faintly in the dappled light. A smile greeted him. Suddenly he was wrapped in a blanket of night and stars. Silken tresses touched his neck, made him shiver. Arms wrapped around him, strong arms, unlike his stick-thin ones he wound around the one holding him.
Sweet desert rose
This memory of Eden haunts us all
This desert flower
This rare perfume, is the sweet intoxication of the fall
Another ecstasy endusing kiss.
He jolted awake. Back in bed. In the upstairs room. He was back at Gruelgrimm's cobbleshop. He hung his head, sighed. Teishi's eyes widened once more, a raven dark feather resting on his lap. Was it a dream...or a memory?
