I'm not sure how long I can endure this one. Honestly, it'll be a lot of heavy work day in and day out, something I'm not used to. The thing is, this is something I have to do and I'll do it because I have to.
I stepped in 5 minutes early, talked to the guy (Lou, older) who was supposed to show me around. Instead, he handed me off to another guy, Eddie (about my age), who showed me what I was going to be doing. For the next 2 days, I'll be helping him out just as I did today, and I think Monday will be my day on my own. I'm just not sure if I'll be ready.
Eddie showed me the lift, a simple little thing but awkward to handle. The turn crank steered the small machine while a joystick drove it forward, backwards and UP AND DOWN. 15 feet into the air, this thing goes.
The layout of the warehouse is goofy to me, but I think I can handle that. The numbering system and where things are supposed to go is another story. Eddie's English isn't so hot, so it's difficult to understand what he's trying to convey to me. We went over the routine of the day, so I hope Lou talks to him and tells him to help me understand the numbers.
The numbers. I'm supposed to pick up order slips and find merchandise stocked in the warehouse. Everything is stacked on shelves 4 floors high.
XX.YY.0Z.A
Now, I know the first two numbers, XX, corresponds to the location. Each row of shelves is numbers and this is where it's at.
YY is the spot on the shelf. Area 13, shelf spot 12, for example.
0Z is the shelf number. 01 is the bottom shelf. 04 is the 15-20 foot high top shelf. s**t is heavy up there, too, sometimes.
I'm not sure what .A is.. ;L
It's not that difficult of a system at first glance, but everything is spread out here and there. 15 is over in that corner. 27-30 over here, 75-80 over there. Sofas over up there, mattresses, etc etc etc. I need a map.
Then, after the first set of slips, there's reprocessing. Returned furniture is wrapped up in plastic or re-boxed and needs to be put back on the shelves. This is where I got confused because it seemed as though everything had its own location. We could put them anywhere, and write the new location, but Eddie seemed to know just what general area these things needed to go. This is what might stump me later.
Damaged goods. This one is easy. Load the lift, from receiving and deposit it to repairs. Yay.
All in all, a decent day. $9 an hour. 6am-2:30pm. 15 minute break at 8 and 1, 30 minute lunch at 11:30. Monday through Friday.
