a rose
She was the sun,
Shining down on him;
He was the night,
Engulfing her whole.

She was as pure as snow,
With a heart of gold;
He was tainted with sinstains,
His heart was bleeding black.

She lived in fantasies, every day.
She never could figure out if
Anything at all was real.
He never wanted to close his eyes.
Everything he dreamed was a nightmare,
But it was all he knew was true.

She sang a song of joy--
How it feels to fly,
How much love she has to give.
He never said a word because
Every time he opened his mouth
He'd want to scream and scream.

She was a lover of the light,
Counted on the sun to show her the way
Through the darkness she feared so much.
He was a creature of the night,
Couldn't bear the scorch of sunshine
Burning his porcelain skin.

She was just another innocent
That should have sustained him.
She should have been a victim.
He couldn't bring himself to strike down
This perfect creature. He wondered,
Can I love without a heart?

She didn't know what he really was
When he finally asked her out,
So she agreed.
He felt a new emotion as, over time,
They grew closer.
"I think this is called happiness."

She was a good influence.
She helped him with addictions,
And showed him how to feel again.
He was bad for her, they said.
He got into fights and there was
Just a dangerous aura about him.

She eventually noticed something odd.
She was sick of nighttime dates,
His refusal to be photographed.
He hated keeping things from her
And told her what he was--
A monster.

She told him to stop joking.
When he assured her he was serious,
She said that he'd gone insane.
He learned that a dead heart still breaks.
He hated what he was,
Because it tore them apart.

She tried and failed to forget about him.
Every boy that she kissed
Tasted just like him.
His already empty world grew bleaker,
And he took out his heartache
On anyone he could find.

She couldn't take it anymore one day
And looked everywhere until she saw him there,
And ran into his arms.
He whispered over their sobs,
"It's too dangerous."
He didn't want to end up hurting her.

She said she didn't care
And kissed him all night long--
Or maybe it was just a moment.
He tried to convince them both
That he didn't deserve her love,
That he was a horrible monster.

She knew they were opposites and it wouldn't work;
She knew he was too dangerous and she might get hurt;
"I love you," she said again and again.
He walked away into the night,
Saying he didn't love her anymore,
But he was crying just as much as her.

She told him not to leave,
But he always did what he wanted to.
He gave her a rose and said it would never die.
"Remember me," he whispered and walked away forever.

She opened her eyes,
And the world came into focus.
It was all a dream.
She was back in the hospital bed,
Hard and cold.
Back to her old, meaningless life.

The nurse came in to tell her
The test results from yesterday came back.
"The cancer... somehow disappeared!"
She couldn't believe her ears.

The doctor had said there wasn't any hope.
She'd been getting steadily worse,
Just waiting for Death to steal her away.
But by some miracle she was going home today.

The doctor called her mother to come pick her up.
For the first time in years, she felt real joy,
Not the temporary escapes of her fantasies.
Everything would be alright for once.

As she was getting her things,
Preparing to leave this place forever,
She noticed a bulge underneath the sheet.
She lifted it to find a rose,
Crimson and perfect.
