I saw LoveMusik the other day. I'm a straight male, and yes, a nerd, and I have a huge love of musicals. Black marks against my name, I know... oh well. However, I found this one...interesting, I guess. They made all of World War II, and the entirety of Communist philosophy seem extraneous to the relationship of two individuals, Weill and Lenya. My other problem with it was that Donna Murphy is nowhere near the vocalist Lenya was, in that her performance fails to captivate an audience, and Weill's music, other than standous numbers like all of the Threepenny songs, Surabaya Johnny, and I Don't Love You, are not very memorable. I'm sorry, I realize that's a minor theatrical blasphemy--a friend just equated it with "ragging on Azumanga Daioh," which I find a weird comparison but whatever--and I understand that Weill added a lot to the maintenance of Brechtian and German cabaret styles. However, I feel like this lacks something as a musical.
But, as a final note, as the title would imply, Cerveris continues to be the primary example of l33t in the universe.
