Hobbes: Leviathan/sovereign.

In the state of nature man is governed by his passions - e.g. hunger, joy, anger, sorrow, etc. the strongest passion is the fear of violent death - this, coupled with the 3 passions Hobbes sees as responsibly for nearly all quarrels - glory, diffidence and competitiveness, mean that the state of nature naturally becomes a state of war. By this, we mean man is always disposed of a willingness to fight.

The only security for man in the state of nature is that with which he can provide himself with - i.e. what his own strength, intelligence, etc. provide him with.
