In the episode “Arena”, the Enterprise chases a Gorn ship, which attacked a Federation colony, into Metron space. Annoyed by the intrusion, the godlike Metrons send Kirk and the Gorn captain to a barren planet to fight to the death. Kirk is no match for the Gorn’s brute strength, but manages to outwit and defeat his opponent. When Kirk refuses to kill the Gorn, the Metrons let both of them go, impressed by the advanced trait of mercy.
