[PROLOG]
The dark streets sparkled the reflection of the lights above as the droplets of liquid that penetrated the earth began to die down. Looking up at where the water originated from, Jaclyn Brooks decided that it was safe to advance her way home. Allowing her ashen hood to cover up brunette curls, she made her way quickly down the roads. The rain came to a stop; her pace decreased.
A few passing cars broke the silence around her. It was never a pleasure for an isolated woman, who are usually vulnerable, to walk the streets of the night. She began to hum a small tune to herself as she witnessed her shadow dancing with the light of the cars. The shadow disappeared moments later, and once again she found herself alone.
Or, so she thought.
She could hear the tapping of footsteps behind her, and, assuming that it was just a regular pedestrian, didn’t think too much of it. It mattered not to her; her apartment was merely a few blocks away.
“But why,” she whispered to herself, “would the paces increase and decrease as mine do? At the same moment?” She found her palms collecting droplets of hot liquid, as did her forhead. Why am I sweating? The words echoed through her mind.
Looking down at her auburn sneakers, her pace quickened once more. So did the dark blob behind. She turned into a jog. Again, the blob mocked her. She bolted into a desperate run, and the figure continued to mime her movements.
She could see her brick apartment up ahead. It was merely a few more blocks, and all she had to do was run expeditiously a little bit faster, a little bit more, and she would be safe. And, if anything in her plan were to go wrong, she would scream.
Screaming was, in fact, something she had not considered beforehand. Hearing an ear-shattering, bloodcurdling shrill of fear pouring from her chapped lips was most likely the more intelligent thing to do in these situations. So, going by her instincts, she let out a sharp cry.
Luckily for her, a good dozen people collected at her side as she found herself out of energy. Everything seemed silent around her, even though she was receiving an accessive amount of questions, besides the loud thumps her heart drummed and the noise of her breath, panting out white clouds in the cold. Even through the throng around her, she could take a small peek at where the blob had stalked her. Nobody was there.
Her eyelids slowly fell.
April 20th, 2006.
Jaclyn Brooks was only twenty-three years when her body had been found on the footsteps of an orphanage; her ears had been cut off, her eyebrows shaved and three toes were missing. There was a large scar around her neck. The only item of clothing that she beared were white gloves and nothing more. She was discovered by an anonymous pedestrian on a morning stroll. Her death was caused by the slice that adopted her neck.
