A discussion my friends and I have been discussing...
Christmas?

I wonder, are there any other holidays in the world that people pick and choose what they want to celebrate from it. I mean, CHRISTmas. The population is divided between people who
A. believe the real story of christmas and celebrate it
B. people who believe the real christmas story and also do the whole santa claus bit. (which i do not hold anything against them)
C. and those who just celebrate christmas as a time to get gifts and write letters to a big man with a beard in a red suit.

I just don't get why people would want to take just the superficil themes of the holiday and not celebrate the deeper meaning. Oh well, i guess i'll never find out

Merry Christmas, Feliz Navidad, and Joyeaux Noel

I don't hold it against people who don't believe in God, it's just that I wonder why they don't call it something else, because it was started because of a Christian celebration. It was just a random wondering I had.

I just see it as a time to celebrate what you have, take time out of whatever work may be pulling down on you, and just spend time with the people that are closest to you, both friends and family. Sure it started as a purely Christian holiday, but as long as the concepts of giving and caring are still there, it would be confusing to call the same day and the same celebration by a different name for everyone who celebrates it, right?

Going off of what you and John are saying Lacy, I think that's how the whole "Happy Holidays" / banishment of Christmas started. The problem is people just go too far. Everything today is about tolerance, and unforately, the one thing largely untolerated are "old school" Christian values. Society is trying to morph Christmas into it's own holiday. There's nothing wrong with the holiday per se: it's a time to take a break from one's busy lifestyle and treasure friends and family...the problem is that the issue is getting out of control.

Still, I think everyone should be able to celebrate Hannakuh, Kwanzaa, Christmas or CHRISTmas.

Ah! Wait! I see! Chrismas, the non-CHRISTian Christmas.
