No one else was about at this time of evening, most of them enjoying dinner with their families. Mothers who were heads of church women's groups, fathers who were little league coaches and lodge members sat down with children they did not have time to get to know, in a houses which were not homes, but souless prisons. They worked ninety hours a week to pay the mortgage on a house in wich they did not live, but only slept, and the note on cars which proclaimed to the neighborhood that they were masters of the universe. Rain walked past, and pitied them. They strove so hard to pretend they were happy, never finding that peace which only came with understanding oneself. Even if she was often trapped within herself, seemingly unable to connect with her fellow humans, Rain at least had a sense of inner peace which only came form spending much time in self contemplation. She might be tormented by feelings of awkwardness in the world at large, but at least she felt like she knew herself. So, she pitied them. 'They spend all their time trying to fill a void in their lives with everything that is not the answer. Things never bring them peace, and they never quite understand why they are so unhappy. They have a perfect family, car house...and yet it's all empty. They never look within for the truth. In the end, they have no peace with themseves, and even sadder, they don't even know that's what they're missing. Pitiful.
