Dying breath
He sat in the seat of the car, staring blankly out the window. Contrary to what would be assumed he wasn’t paying much attention to the things that passed by at all. He was far too lost in thought for any of that. There was only one thing on his mind at the time, one person to be far more accurate, even more to the point, a girl. Now it wasn’t too uncommon for him to be lost in thought over some girl, even the slightest crush was enough to take over his mind completely, but this, this was different. She had been on his mind a lot more than seemed normal. To be completely blunt, it was weird. It seemed every waking moment that he wasn’t preoccupied with some time consuming task he thought about her.
Then again, she wasn’t just any other girl either. She was the love of his life.
On and off for the past year he had been by her side, carefully biding his time.
Waiting for that one moment where he could finally be with her again.
Yah that’s right, again. They’d been together before. Only problem is, he ruined it in just two weeks… But finally his chance was close; this time for sure his hard work would pay off.
She was finally single, finally alone and he would have his chance, finally.
But that didn’t work either. He confronted her, he did not make her aware of his intents but he heard all he needed to, at least to know he had no chance… She had told him she wanted to remain single, to “Take a Break”…
The year was almost over and he had no time left, it seems he would have to wait longer, and so he did.
The time did eventually come when he returned to school, a fresh new chance to be with the person he loved. He didn’t waste a day, right off the bat he started working on their relationship. But again the odds seemed against him. He would have to work extra hard. Because at the time, he was not without competition.
He looked up at the passing streetlights and took a deep breath; he looked over to his mother at the weal, then back to the window. After another sigh he settled back into his thoughts.
Several months passed and he didn’t manage to get much closer to his goal. Besides the occasional date, she showed no signs of any lasting affection for him. Quickly he began to doubt his whole situation. There seemed to be no hope any way, which is, until that one night.
He had come to visit her at her house; it was convenient being as she lived so close to him. Most of the night things seemed to not being going so great. Just, normal, she didn’t seem enthralled by his company. They would just sit there on her bed, watching movies. Hours passed and it neared the time he would have to leave. In a playful attempt at objecting to leave he attached himself to her. He lay there on top of her staring into her eyes. After only a couple seconds he leaned in and gently placed a kiss on her lips. She would stare at him blankly for several moments before leaning up and returning the kiss.
He went home that night overwhelmed with joy He was finally so close to accomplishing his goal, and this time, he had proof. He tried to call anyone he could but to no avail, no answer from anyone the news would have to wait until tomorrow…
As it turned out, the news became invalid. He learned the very next day that something had happened in her life that distracted her from him, and in a desperate and foolish attempt at salvaging the relationship he pressured her to be with him, which ultimately in the repelled her from him. One week later, she was no longer single…
But it was ok, he would just wait some more, after all he had been doing it for over a year now and it didn’t kill him last time. Why should this time be any different? He did after all still have the rest of this, and all of next year to keep trying, he had plenty of time.
Still lost in thought he noticed a dull noise. Slowly as he began to focus on he realized it was a scream. The scream became deafening and he jerked over to find where it was coming from. Before he could even look over he was thrown forward.
They had crashed into an oncoming vehicle.
Slowly he began to regain consciousness; he looked down at his body. It was devastated, not a single inch of his skin was without damage. Flashing lights and a blur of voices were all taking up the little metal awareness he had to offer. He looked around dizzily and noticed his mother’s cell phone still in one piece on the ground. Using all of his effort he began to crawl over to it. He dialed it clumsily as he started losing the numb feeling, pain surging through his body.. 2-1-7-5-3… He dialed from memory, instinctually.
He waited limp laying his head on this phone now as it ringed, after only a little while she answered. “Hello?” She questioned.
“Good it’s you.” He coughed up a little glob of blood and continued. “I want you to know, I love you, I’m sorry.” He bit his bottom lip as the pain became tom much for his body and he drifted back into unconsciousness.
A week later, he died.
The girl didn’t come back to the school for several months distraught with his death, and how he choose to use his final breath.
