I'm working on a thought about writers block right now, and the thought goes like this: it stems primarily not from lacking the correct words, phrasing, or to be all encompassing and stylish and Froggy to boot: le mot juste. It stems not from these things, but from the possibility that I'm just not sure about the next step.

What I mean, darling dears, is that while the next sentence may be a bit of a roadblock, it is more because I cannot visualize the next step in the plot or character development. I can see the big picture, where everything will ultimately lead, but I can't figure out to take the interstate or the highway, if you will. Or there's so much fog, I can't even see the road.

Bah, an ugly metaphor, but the best at hand for the moment, and for my unclear thoughts.

This is the problem with a rewrite. I'm already intimate with the characters at this stage, and I am making alterations to the plot at large. So now I need to figure out new baby steps to take my dear characters to the end I desire, having them progress as characters should (naturally) but with the hope that they will remain at least recognizable to the characters they ended up as in the first draft. And so, dealing with different elements in the plot, I must find a way from beginning to end, hitting an appropriate middle along the way.

I'm only starting chapter three. The ground beneath the great stone of action is thinking about crumbling. Perhaps once a few pebbles rattle down the ravine, the process will become more easy for me, though I doubt it.

I will probably be forced to entertain a new theory of writer's block.
