Emmeline Pankhurst gave a speech in the year of 1908. This woman wrote and gave a speech about the rights of women in England. This woman gave examples of marriage rights, educational employment, motherhood and what would happen if a wife became a widow. She also provided three ways of how the women’s vote can be a symbol, a safeguard and an instrument.
Pankhurst described the vote as a symbol of freedom and liberty. She described it as an instrument to make changes in the law(s). She described it as a safeguard that would let the government hear women out and have their choices too.
After Pankhurst described the need for the vote she began to speak about the roles that women have in the following situations: marriage rights, education/employment, motherhood and if the wife became a widow.
If a woman got engaged and married she would have to give up her employment. This would cause her to lose her job and lose a lot of money. If a woman wanted a job, just like everyone would, she would fill out an application. Even though they did so most of the time the men would get the job despite their education.
When a woman got married she had no power. As a mother her only job was to give birth, clean the house and so on. She wasn’t even considered the parent of her own child!
If she became a widow her fate was entirely up to what her husband had in his will. If he didn’t leave anything for his wife and or children, she would have nothing-yet it was considered legal.
Women wanted the vote so that they could make the just unjust. They also wanted to be considered by the government. If they got the vote for this, then everything would be fair and women can be considered by the government. They could have a say in their own child’s life for a change!
