Whenever he mentions Paris, I think of home and wondered if I really did turn off the stove. Or if the lights are off and the doors are locked. It doesn’t matter if I’m sure that I double check before we left to the airport. I get the sense that I forgot to do something. Throughout the entire vacation this thought sat in the back of my mind, but I’ll know soon enough because we’re on our way home now.
We took a uber home and as soon as we’re through the door, the smell hit us. In the center of the kitchen table, a basket of rotten apples sat all brown and moldy. I forgot to ask the neighbor if they wanted our perishables because I absolutely hate wasting food. If not, I would have donated some to the church or soup kitchen and use the rest for composting.
I pull my shirt up to my nose and opened the fridge. The smell inside was just as unpleasant and it wasn’t too difficult to spot the culprits. The leftover chicken from a few weeks ago went bad. So did the eggs, cheese, milk and the spicy shrimp kabobs were all spoiled by now.
