Photo of Maneki Neko Mug
This adorable mug is Maneki Neko, which means Beckoning Cat, though he’s often just called Lucky Cat — a symbol of prosperity, fortune in business, and general good luck. In Japan you’ll see him everywhere: in the windows or counter in restaurants and shops, tucked among the bottles in bars, perched on desks at work, and as a welcoming presence in people’s homes. He’s on T-shirts and dishes, sake decanters, key chains, cell phone straps. He’s basically everywhere and on nearly everything because he’s a well-known icon.
I got this during 4th of July, at a little Asian store in NYC with my sister and her boyfriend. I couldn’t resist the cute cat shaped mug of Lucky Cat. Plus, I’m a sucker for all things cat theme.
