I don’t understand why Ninja Theory used Nephilim and the only conclusion I can think of is that they didn’t do their homework at all. The original series Devil May Cry, Dante and Vergil are half human and half demon. That would have made them a Cambion. Cambion is the offspring of a demon and a human. Nephilim are the offspring of an angel and a human, not of a demon and angel.
For DmC’s Dante and Vergil there is no technical term for those that are half angel and half demon. I can get why they wouldn’t want to use “half-breed” or “half-blood” because it doesn’t sound as cool or look as special as Nephilim (or Cambion). But they could have use that opportunity to do something unique by creating a new term to mean the offspring of an angel and demon.
It’s not that difficult to make something up, especially for a fictional world. It’s something that anyone can do and it’s quite easy. For example, right on the spot I created the word Dimidaelus. How did I do that? Well, I use three Latin words to create it: dimidium (half), daemon (demon) and angelus (angel). I formed a new word by combining a part from each of the three words together. So to me the meaning of the new word would stand for half-breed/offspring of a angel and demon.
This is just another disappointing aspect of DmC because if you’re going to go around boasting about how masterful the script is and how it’s going to be able to beat out Hollywood films, at least have some idea of what you’re talking about. I just feel like that the only reason they used Nephilim was because it was a way to advertise the game and to make Dante seem even more special. It’s as though they added the word (despite the interpretations of the term) in the game as a after thought just to make it seem unique.
