It’s understandable that people dislike things because it’s only natural in life for people to have different interest, especially when it comes to fanfiction. So it’s not surprising that some dislike lemons, some dislike drabbles, others dislike slash and so on. There are even some that dislike certain pairings, OC-centric stories or reader-inserts.
But the disappointing part is when people dislike or even go as far as to say they hate something WITHOUT a real reason. They just hate it.
Lately, I’ve been seeing a growing number of unreasonable hate towards reader-inserts. I know they aren’t that popular but many people just automatically hate it without giving it a chance. Or if they do, they hate it after reading a couple of poorly done reader-inserts. It’s not exactly fair to declare a legit point of view that it’s stupid and that it shouldn’t exist in literature. If the reader-insert style, the second point of view is written appropriately it can be very effective and interesting.
It’s pretty much the same with OC-centric stories. It is a well known fact that many of them aren’t the greatest. Actually Sturgeon’s Law (ninety percent of everything is crap) applies to many things, including literature/fanfiction. Those horrible stories shouldn’t cause prejudice though. There are diamonds among the coal and it’s all in the matter of finding them and giving them a chance.
Just as it’s unfair to stereotype that all OCs stories are Mary Sues, it’s also unfair to state the same for reader-inserts or that they’re all self-inserts. That kind of perspective will blind people to the amazing works out there and it’s saddening to see them miss out on them.
If people decide to dislike or hate something then I hope that they have a legitimate reason(s) to do so. And that it’s not for a petty one such as ‘because they’re ALL written bad or have bad plots’.
