Name meaning: Proteus (Latin for ‘first’), Adamas (Latin for ‘diamond’)

Powers:
Manipulation of Pressure – Proteus can freely manipulate atmospheric pressure, since he’s been able to withstand it for millions of years. From lowering it to increasing it, he can do anything that involves pressure. His most preferred method of attack is to highly increase the air pressure around his enemy, then suddenly lower it to create an effect similar to The Bends. He can also shoot pulses of air pressure from his hands, both high and low. If he increases the air pressure around his enemy long enough (assuming it’s human), increased pressure can cause their organs to collapse. If he lowers it enough, it can cause the opponents’ blood to boil (again, assuming they’re human). Because of the effects of pressure on temperature, he can indirectly control temperature to an extent. If he’s in a volcanically active spot or in an area near one, he can use pressure to summon lava for a short period of time. This takes a lot of energy, however, and he prefers to use it as a last resort. For recreation, he likes to find coal (the remains of his long lost friends) and compress them to make diamonds. Sometimes, he earns money by creating and selling gemstones.

Super Endurance – Proteus can withstand many things: High temperature (he sleeps and swims in lava sometimes), high acidity levels, low acidity levels, and high salinity. Since archaebacteria have been able to survive through traumatizing events, he’s very able to take hits. He hates the cold, however, and his scars are especially sensitive.

Other – He can convert harmful chemicals into methane and carbon dioxide (one of his most embarrassing traits is that he gets gas when there’s poison around).

Personality: He’s antisocial and extremely introverted, for several reasons. He’s been around for so long that nearly all of his closest friends have died out; as a result, he decided to try not to make many more friends to save himself the heartbreak. He’s also gone through several hibernations (K-T event, O-S, and many other extinctions), and as a result, has forgotten a lot of the proper ways to be social. He’s also very sensitive about all the scars he bears, and tries to cover most of them in bandages. Though it’s been such a long time since his extinct friends died, he finds their remains (coal) and makes them into diamonds, so that “they’ll be friends forever” (“Diamonds are forever”). He’s made a few exceptions, friend-wise; he travels with Nai Li because he believes that she won’t go extinct for a very long time, due to her endurance ability being far greater than his own. He’s actually taken a strong liking to her, but is afraid to admit it. He’s also very close with Anaash, who is the only other living being older than he is.

History: He was born shortly after Anaash appeared, and was her first creation. As a result, the two have grown extremely close, much like brother and sister. His kind was so well adapted to environments that he outlived most of his friends (dinosaurs, trilobites, etc) and became depressed at their deaths. After living through the 5 most catastrophic extinctions (and suffering an enormous amount of scars), he became highly introverted to any other social life. He became a member of Hex Regna when Anaash formed it as the leader of the Kingdom of Archaea. Some time later, he met Nai Li and traveled with her. Occasionally, when the two are low on money, Proteus creates gemstones while Nai Li sells them.

Other: He likes ancient Greek fashion. His sense of time is so slow that it’s hard for him to keep up with the current fashion trends (he’s about a thousand or two years behind). When forced to participate in social occasions (such as speaking in front of a group), he stutters and flushes.
