It seems all I am doing lately is running away.

Running away...

I had a wonderful visitor today. Alice appeared in my room through a secret door I had completely forgotten from a mischievous childhood. I ran to embrace her.

"Alice! What is going on? No one tells me anything!"

She cannot resist returning my embrace, but I can tell she is trying to be angry with me. She was always the more responsible one.

"What madness overtook you to come here?" she tried to snap, but there was a smile on her face. Her way of saying, "Wonderful to see you, Alisyn dear, even if you're daft."

"Have you seen him?" I ask anxiously.

Her face is grave. "They're going to execute him."

"What?!" How could he? The selfish, heartless--I felt angry tears well up.

Alice takes my hands. "Listen, Alisyn. I think I can end this once and for all. But...Edward may have to...he might die. Are you okay with that?"

The anger takes control of me. I can only think one thing: he will not take another person I love away from me! Especially not him...my air, my sun, my cure for this drug...

"Do it," I say venomously. "Do what you must."

Alice looked hesitant. "Are you sure?"

"Yes!" I cried. "Goodness knows he caused us all enough suffering. Just end it!"

She nodded. "I will return. Be ready."

So many times I wonder.

If I had known then of that silent eavesdropper...the guard that had heard our whispers and our plans...
