My report on Ireland
Ireland is a country settled in 400 B.C by the Celts and today many people are helping to save the
environment. I chose Ireland because the majority of our ancestors were Irish and it is a wonderful place to be.
When the Celts settled in 400 B.C, they were followed by the vikings, nomads, and the English. They raided
Ireland in the 790s establishing settlements in the 9th century. Their race soon ended in 1014, when the king
of Ireland defeated them in 1812. A treaty was agreed to allow southern Ireland to become a self-governing
dominion called the Irish free state, within the British common wealth.
Ireland has one famous mountain called Macgillycuddy's Reek, where Ireland's highest peak,
Carrantuohill reaches 3,400 feet above sea level. Ireland is made up of Meadows, lakes, bogs, and twisting
rivers. The Great Shannon River is the longest in the British Isles. The river is over 200 miles long (Grolier par 5).
Ireland is in western Europe, occupying five-sixths of the island in the north Atlantic ocean, west of Great
Britain. Wales, Scotland, and the United Kingdom neighbor Ireland. Ireland's capital is Dublin, Where actor
Stuart Townsend was born in 1972.
The climate region is temprate maritime. Ireland is constantly humid and Ireland has cool summers and
mild winters. The temperature in the northern coastal areas are around 57 degrees fahrenheit (13.9 degrees
celsius), while in the southwest areas it is 3 degrees warmer. The coastal areas in the west and south parts of
Ireland have temperatures of 42 degrees fahrenheit (5.6 degrees celsius) in January. The southwestern tip
of Ireland is 44 degrees fahrenheit (6.7 degrees celsius).
The Celtics and the English are the only two ethnic groups in Ireland. The total population is 4,156,119
people. The life expectancy for males is 75.27 years and for females it is 80.7 years.
Ireland's government is a multipartyed government and it is based on a parliamentary democracy. The
head of state is the president, head of government is the prime minister ,and the legislature is the bicameral
Parliament. The current president of Ireland is Mary Mcaleese.
The monetary unit is every one euro equals one hundred cents. The gross national product and the gross
domestic product is 40% per capita (Credo par 5).
The major religions are: Roman Catholic 88.4%, Curch of Ireland 3%, other christian 1.6%, other 1.5%
unspecified 2% and none 3.5%. The language that is mainly used throught Ireland is english, and gealic is
mainly used in some areas along the western seaboard (credo par 5).
Ireland celebrates the same holidays as we do, but the real major holiday is St. Patrick's day. This day
they call his religious feast day, but it also marks the anniversary of his death in the 5th century (History
Channle par 5).
I come to the conclution that Ireland is a little bit more interesting than I thought it would be, plus I
found out new information that I didn't know before and I hope you learned something new as well.
